Lauded for his many contributions to the field, Dr. Wächtler has extensive experience as a specialist in infectious disease, internal medicine and hepatology. Throughout his career, he has most notably been involved with the AIDS crisis, contributing significantly to research and fieldwork in HIV and AIDS. Dr. Wächtler witnessed the first European AIDS patient when he was in Frankfurt. He has since accompanied numerous individuals with HIV treatment and diagnosis and has lectured in this area. In preparation for his medical career, Dr. Wächtler earned a MD from the University of Frankfurt/Main in 1984. Subsequently, he completed a residency at the German Heart Center in Munich between 1985 and 1987. He also received numerous professional credentials, including certification in hepatology from the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases, as a specialist in infectious diseases from the Bavarian Association of Physicians, and as a specialist in internal medicine from the Bavarian Medical Association. Furthermore, Dr. Wächtler is a licensed physician and board-certified physician.
Dr. Wächtler became involved in the medical field due to his childhood. His father was a German priest. As a child growing up in a German Christian household, he was always interested in human beings and the sciences. Particularly fascinated by psychology, biology, chemistry, nature and medicine, he was also intrigued by the human body and how medicine compromises all those interests.
Highly engaged in his professional community, Dr. Wächtler is affiliated with the German Society of Infectious Diseases, the German Society of Internal Medicine, and the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases. These memberships have been pivotal to remaining at the forefront of his field.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Wächtler has contributed numerous articles on infectious disease and hepatology in professional journals. He also authored the 2014 publication “AIDS: Major Opportunistic Infections.”
Dr. Wächtler’s hard work earned him a scholarship from the department of clinical chemistry and neuroendocrinology at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, in Munich from 1984 to 1985. Over the past four decades, his most significant accomplishments have included his success with patients. He has also drawn significant rewards from his teaching career and witnessing his students as they excel in the classroom. Interacting with his students has been rather unique, as Dr. Wächtler has learned just as much from them as they have from him.
