Robert Eugene Zipf, Jr., MD, Retired Medical Laboratory Director, Legal Medicine Consultant, Clinical & Forensic Pathologist at R.E. Zipf, M.D., P.A., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in forensic pathology.
A United States Air Force veteran and highly acclaimed physician who retired after accruing more than four decades of professional experience, Dr. Zipf achieved profound success as an assistant professor of pathology at Duke University and as a regional forensic pathologist with the State of North Carolina. He has additionally excelled as the director of laboratories for Nash Health Care Systems; as an expert consultant in laboratory management; and as a medical, legal and forensic pathology consultant. He served admirably as president of R.E. Zipf PA Pathology Associates from 1978 to 2005, providing an array of consultative services that included medical laboratory software; medical forensics; and laboratory management for area hospitals, law enforcement agencies, courts and attorneys. He previously thrived as deputy coroner and forensic pathologist for Franklin County in Ohio and as director of radioisotope pathology at Riverside Methodist Hospital from 1974 to 1978. Earlier in his career, he excelled as the director of forensic Pathology at Duke University Medical Center from 1967 until 1972.
Dr. Zipf prepared for his career by earning an MD from Ohio State University in 1966, as well as a bachelor’s degree from DePauw University in 1962. He served an internship with Miami Valley Hospital in 1967 and later completed his training in pathology at Duke University Health Systems. A major in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1974, he was chief anatomic pathologist at the USAF Major Medical Center in 1972 and a consultant to the USAF Surgeon General from 1972 to 1974. Eminently qualified, Dr. Zipf has multiple board certifications in pathology.
Among his many influential achievements, Dr. Zipf led the successful conversion of Durham County coroner’s system to a medical examiner’s system, established Clintrac Pathology Software, and assisted in the design and installation of some of the earliest laboratory information systems. As a seasoned researcher, he investigated numerous deaths linked to radiation overdose in Franklin County. Widely recognized as an expert in his field, Dr. Zipf served on numerous boards, taught as a clinical assistant professor at the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, and was an adjunct professor, as well as the director, of the medical technology program at Barton College.
Committed to improving the welfare of his community, Dr. Zipf has been active with numerous local organizations, including service on the forensic advisory board of the North Carolina Department of Justice and with the mayor’s Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse. Additionally, he has served on the board of directors of Nash Community College and the board of trustees of North Carolina Wesleyan College, and has lent his time, expertise and mentorship to Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. An active member of the Kiwanis Club, he has spent many years aligned with the Boy Scouts of America as a former Eagle Scout. Moreover, Dr. Zipf is a longtime adviser to the Zipf Charitable Trust and Fund, which he established in 1999.
Notably, Dr. Zipf has been featured in 19 editions of Marquis’ Who’s Who in America, nine publications of Who’s Who in the World, seven printings of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and three issues of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. He has also been included in Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Moreover, he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
