Before joining the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Obaro spent over a decade as a professor of pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center from 2012 to 2023. His tenure there was marked by significant contributions to research and education in pediatric infectious diseases. Earlier in his academic journey, Dr. Obaro held a professorship in pediatrics at Michigan State University, where he developed his expertise in child health and infectious disease management. He also gained valuable experience working with the Children’s Hospital early in his career.
A hallmark achievement in Dr. Obaro’s professional journey occurred three decades ago when he collaborated with the U.K. Medical Research Council to establish surveillance for serious bacterial infections among children in The Gambia. Through this pioneering work, he demonstrated both the safety and immunogenicity of early pneumococcal conjugate vaccine formulations and confirmed their effectiveness in reducing invasive pneumococcal infections among children. Dr. Obaro’s findings revealed that while vaccine-targeted strains declined, non-vaccine strains could increase, shifting rather than eradicating disease epidemiology. This insight was instrumental in driving the development of higher-valency conjugate vaccines and underscored the ongoing need for improved strategies to control childhood pneumococcal infections.
Dr. Obaro’s academic credentials are foundational to his success as a clinician-scientist and educator. His medical training began with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria. He also acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in immunology from Imperial College London, focusing on immune responses to encapsulated bacterial pathogens in children, a subject that continues to inform his research today. Additionally, Dr. Obaro earned a Master of Urban Planning from the Royal College of Physicians. Further demonstrating his commitment to excellence, he completed a clinical fellowship with the West African College of Physicians and attained fellowships with both the Royal College of Physicians and Child Health in the U.K. and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Recognized for excellence, Dr. Obaro is a fellow of both the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. Civic engagement is also central to his professional identity. Over 10 years ago, he notably founded the International Foundation Against Infectious Diseases (IFAIN) in Nigeria, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing research into pediatric infectious disease epidemiology and providing training for medical professionals interested in this field. Under Dr. Obaro’s leadership, IFAIN has secured over $15 million in research funding from sources including the U.S. federal government, the Gates Foundation and pharmaceutical industry partners. The foundation collaborates closely with Nigeria’s Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense to enhance microbiology laboratory capacity within military and government hospitals, and has since extended training support to Liberia and Rwanda.
Dr. Obaro’s commitment to global health education is further reflected through visiting professorships at Bingham University in Nigeria, Danubius International University in Romania, and the University of Rwanda. As an accomplished author, he contributed ‘Efficacy of Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine in Malawian Children,’ published by The Lancet in 2024. This work adds to his legacy as a thought leader advancing evidence-based interventions for childhood infectious diseases.
Throughout his career, Dr. Obaro has been recognized for his scholarly impact and leadership within the scientific community. In 2019, he was listed in the Stanford Citation Index as one of the top 2% most-cited scientists globally, a testament to his influence on pediatric infectious disease research. Additionally, Dr. Obaro was honored with a Federal Government of Nigeria award as Best Clinical Student during medical school.
Dr. Obaro attributes much of his success to opportunities that allowed him to transition his training across continents, from Nigeria to the U.K. and later to the U.S., despite considerable challenges and sacrifices associated with retraining after achieving prior success in West Africa. He credits perseverance and unwavering family support as essential factors in enabling him to reach current heights within medicine and academia.

He aims to promote contextual capacity building by identifying local needs and collaborating with communities on sustainable solutions that reduce dependence on external resources while fostering reciprocal learning between regions.
