By analyzing electroencephalogram data from the scalp surface and applying an inverse solution, Dr. Thatcher’s system examines all 130 Brodmann areas, each anatomically unique, to identify dysfunction at the level of individual brain hubs.

This approach allows clinicians to compare patient data against an extensive Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-registered normative database comprising healthy individuals aged three to 82 years. Such precision enables targeted interventions for conditions like attention disorders, depression and schizophrenia by reinforcing specific neural hubs through biofeedback or magnetic stimulation. Dr. Thatcher’s methodology is now utilized by approximately 5,000 clinicians worldwide, including neurologists and clinical psychologists who remain engaged through a weekly newsletter distributed by his team.

Before establishing Applied Neuroscience Inc., Dr. Thatcher served as the director of MRI and quantitative EEG evaluation of traumatic brain injury at Bay Pines Veterans Administration Medical Center from 1993 to 2001. During this period, he also held the position of adjunct professor at the University of South Florida, where he contributed to academic research while managing administrative responsibilities at Bay Pines. Dr. Thatcher’s transition to Florida was motivated by personal circumstances that allowed him to remain close to his daughter while continuing his research and academic work.

Between 1990 and 1993, Dr. Thatcher was a project manager for the NIH-National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland. In this capacity, he coordinated research on multimodal integration and quantitative EEG involving leading scientists. Dr. Thatcher’s work contributed to significant advancements in neuroimaging technologies alongside major initiatives, such as the Human Brain Project.

Among Dr. Thatcher’s earlier roles, he served as a professor at the University of Maryland in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore area from 1979 to 1990. His previous tenure included associate professor in the department of psychiatry at the Grossman School of Medicine at New York University between 1977 and 1979 and assistant professor at New York Medical College from 1973 to 1977. Dr. Thatcher’s academic journey began as a postdoctoral fellow and neuroanatomy lab instructor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1971, where he spent two years under the mentorship of Dominic Purpura.

Dr. Thatcher’s expertise spans science, mathematics, physics and chemistry, disciplines in which he has achieved notable mastery. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oregon, awarded in 1962 after completing coursework in mathematics and physics. It was during his time at the University of Oregon that a course on brain physiology ignited his lifelong passion for neuroscience. This pivotal experience set Dr. Thatcher on a path that would ultimately lead to a PhD in physiological psychology.

As a member of both the Society for Neuroscience and the Association for Applied Psychophysiology Biofeedback, Dr. Thatcher remains actively engaged with professional communities dedicated to advancing brain science. He also regularly contributes lectures on topics related to quantitative EEG and neuroimaging.

Dr. Thatcher’s scholarly output includes authorship of more than 10 books and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles available through major academic platforms such as Amazon. His most recent publication, “Beauty and the Brain: The Aesthetic Compass: NeuroAesthetics: Where Consciousness and the Physics of the Universe Meet How Do We Perceive Beauty?” explores how anatomical structures within the visual cortex map onto perception using mathematical principles such as logarithmic spirals.

Throughout his career, Dr. Thatcher has distinguished himself through rigorous scientific inquiry and innovation in brain imaging techniques. He is recognized for compiling one of the largest normative databases in neuroscience, encompassing more than 20,000 subjects, all carefully screened for health status through neuropsychological testing and regulatory compliance with FDA standards. Dr. Thatcher’s approach allows practitioners to identify specific neural hubs associated with memory, attention or movement disorders and tailor interventions accordingly.
