Thelma Evans, Internist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in internal medicine.
As a teenager, Dr. Evans nearly lost her sight due to an accident. It was through the care of her doctors that her eye was saved. This care also lead to her choice to become a doctor, as she realized how much of an impact she could have on someone’s life. Prior to retiring in 2017, Dr. Evans served on the board of directors of the Advocate Health Care Network and on the advisory board of the Advocate Professional Group. She had been a physician at the Michael Reese Health Plan, Health First Inc. and St. Luke’s Medical Center among various other clinics and health groups. In her medical career, she became known for taking her time with patients. At one point, she had more than 3,000 patients because they knew of her excellent care and focus while providing treatment and that she wasn’t focused on watching the clock.
Dr. Evans first earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology at the University of Illinois with honors in 1967. She continued at the institution to receive an MD in 1969 and followed through with a residency and internship at the university’s hospital. From 1971 to 1973, Dr. Evans was a fellow in pulmonary medicine at the institution. She was licensed to practice throughout her career, up until her retirement in 2017. Dr. Evans was certified in internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine. In addition to her career as a physician, she served as a tuberculosis control officer with the Infectious Disease Section of the Chicago Department of Health and as an instructor at the Rush Medical College. She also did occupational medicine with AT&T when her children were younger so she could be home more often.
Dr. Evans was awarded a grant from the Chicago Lung Association from 1972 to 1973. In her career, she maintained professional affiliation as a fellow of the American College of Physicians and as a member of the American Medical Association, the American Medical Women’s Association, NAACP and the American Association of Professional Women. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, gardening, attending ballets and operas and working with the Church by supervising the nurse’s board.
