David Karl Davis, Professor Emeritus at City University of New York, Hunter College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in gerontology.
Growing up, the young Mr. Davis had a particular interest and concern for the elderly population in his neighborhood. He loved being of assistance to them, as well as solving problems, which essentially guided him to his professional career in gerontology. A registered nurse in New York and Pennsylvania, Dr. Davis attended Columbia University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in pre-medical studies in 1962 and a Master of Arts in education in 1963. He then attended New York University, where he earned a Master of Arts in family life and sex counseling in 1969 and a Doctor of Education in gerontology in 1979.
Most recently, Dr. Davis served as a professor at the City University of New York, Hunter College from 1970 until attaining emeritus status in 1997. Notably, from 1984 to 1995, he was a faculty member of the Hunter College and Mount Sinai Hospital Graduate School of Medicine’s Gerontological Learning Education Center. Prior, he was a special education teacher with the New York City Public Schools from 1966 to 1970 and the chair of nursing and surgical nursing at St. Catherine’s Hospital School in Brooklyn from 1963 to 1966. Dr. Davis commenced his career as a charge nurse at Presbyterian Hospital for two years until 1962 and as a supervisor at Gracie Square Hospital for one year.
Distinguished for his career success, Dr. Davis was the recipient of an Excellence in Leadership Award from the Brookdale Center for Aging in 1989 and a Research Award from the City University of New York in 1987. He is also a 1962 fellow of Columbia University and a 1968 New York University fellow. Presently, Dr. Davis maintains affiliation with the St. David’s Society, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Lambda Theta, Sigma Theta Tau and Columbia University Nursing Education Alumni Association, in which he was named to its Hall of Fame in 2009.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Davis has been an international lecturer on age-related issues, having done 43 lectures in the United States and Canada between 2007 and 2011. In the 1980s, he lectured abroad in Italy for one month and in the Soviet Union for three months. Likewise, his research has been published in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and Nursing Science Quarterly, along with various other gerontological journals. Dr. Davis is the co-author of the 1986 work, “Gerontological Nursing in the Professional Curriculum.” To attest to his legacy, Dr. Davis can also be found in the 55th and 67th through 70th editions of Who’s Who in America and the 29th through 33rd editions of Who’s Who in the World.
