Title: 1) President; 2) Co-Founder and Co-Owner
Company: 1) Blackwood Vascular Inc.; 2) Joia Verde
Location: Longmeadow, Massachusetts, United States
Stuart L. Blackwood, MD, president of Blackwood Vascular Inc. and co-founder and co-owner of Joia Verde, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in vascular surgery.
Although Dr. Blackwood has excelled as a vascular surgeon for more than 15 years, that vocation is only one part of an extensive, multifaceted career. That journey began in 2009 as a resident surgeon at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Blackwood completed a subsequent surgical residency at Danbury Hospital, where he remained active for 12 years. From 2016 to 2022, he held a postdoctoral fellowship in surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
While excelling during his time at Brigham, Dr. Blackwood accepted a concurrent role as a vascular surgeon at Baystate Medical Center in 2021. By 2023, he had established his reputation sufficiently to transition into private practice and founded his own company focused on his specialty of vascular surgery. Since then, Dr. Blackwood has served as the president of Blackwood Vascular Inc., an organization dedicated to educating patients and physicians, as well as supporting innovation in the industry. He was motivated to start his own company because he felt that what other hospitals were offering didn’t align with his vision. Now, Dr. Blackwood embraces the opportunity to teach other physicians how to successfully navigate the complex world of independently contracting as a vascular surgeon. He also designs and attends various summits and conferences to share additional information.
Overcoming the exhausting schedule of a doctor and surgeon, Dr. Blackwood has filled his hours with multiple pursuits beyond his primary vocation. Exploring the world of real estate, he has co-founded and co-owns Joia Verde, a venture centered on a two-home, 130-acre property in the Berkshires region of Massachusetts. Through Joia Verde, Dr. Blackwood takes the opportunity to put in physical labor, building his business in a more material way than his work as a surgeon. He is currently focused on expanding the two structurally distinct houses on the property in order to provide a luxury retreat for guests interested in exploring nearby ski resorts or immersing themselves in nature.
In addition to his real estate and medical endeavors, Dr. Blackwood also demonstrates his devotion to his children through his efforts as a head soccer coach since 2023. He considers this position to be the most fulfilling experience of his life. Dr. Blackwood also takes pride in having traveled to Germany to study under some of the world’s leading experts in repairing penetrating and branch aneurysms, as well as his contributions to vascular surgery. But he has never felt a stronger sense of excitement and joy than he has when leading his soccer team in building confidence, discipline and teamwork.
Dr. Blackwood’s performance across multiple fields was born of his academic journey. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology from Morgan State University in 2004. Following that, Dr. Blackwood earned an MD from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2009. He stays up-to-date on industry trends through membership in the Society for Vascular Surgery and the New England Society for Vascular Surgery.
When considering his success, Dr. Blackwood believes his neurodivergent brain has played a significant role. He was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) later in his life and has embraced the aspects of his personality that set him apart from others, finding a way for the benefits to outweigh the challenges. Dr. Blackwood notes that his ADHD allows him to invest fully in ideas, giving 110% where others might settle for 60%. He recalls moments when someone has asked a question that has prompted him to spend the next 24 hours researching, staying up all night drinking coffee, so that he can determine the right answer.
Alongside his neurodivergence, Dr. Blackwood expresses gratitude to his wife, Cecilia Blackwood, for her strong support. When not focused on one of his jobs, he spends time designing a sustainable home and researching climate change. Dr. Blackwood has ambitious plans for his future, including becoming a pilot, building the aforementioned sustainable house and launching a podcast about burnout in the world of medicine. He also intends to refocus on his personal growth by studying yoga, Reiki and other holistic approaches to self-care.
