J. Peter R. Pelletier, MD, Medical Director of Transfusion Services at UF Health Shands Hospital, UF Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Health Care Administration.

Dr. Pelletier has established a notable career in transfusion medicine and pathology, currently serving as the medical director of transfusion services at the University of Florida (UF) Health Shands Hospital since 2014. In this capacity, he oversees the safety and efficacy of blood product modifications, manages inventory for massive bleeding cases and provides expert consultation when patients develop new alloantibodies. His responsibilities include ensuring that blood products are washed adequately for patients with severe allergic reactions and irradiated for those who are severely immunocompromised, thereby preventing transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease. Dr. Pelletier also supports clinicians in intrauterine transfusions, a critical intervention for mothers whose antibodies attack fetal red blood cells.

In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Pelletier conducts research on platelet storage and artificial blood, aiming to extend viability and optimize transfusion strategies for life-threatening bleeds. He is recognized for his expertise in component storage and massive transfusion protocols, having contributed significantly to the field through both research and practice.

As a clinical professor in the departments of pathology, immunology and laboratory medicine and anesthesia at UF Health Shands Hospital, Dr. Pelletier teaches medical students about blood banking, delivering lectures to second-year students annually, and providing month-long instruction to residents in anatomical clinical pathology and blood banking. Dr. Pelletier notably initiated a fellowship program at Shands Hospital, celebrating the graduation of its first fellow in 2024.

Dr. Pelletier’s leadership was instrumental in UF Health Shands Hospital achieving level one trauma validation from the American College of Surgeons, making it one of only 22 hospitals in the United States with a pediatric level one trauma center. He played a pivotal role in developing the massive transfusion protocol for pediatrics, which was essential for securing this accreditation.

Before his tenure at UF Health Shands Hospital, Dr. Pelletier served as medical director in the U.S. Air Force from 2010 to 2014. During this period, he held an appointment as consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General in pathology and transfusion medicine, and represented the U.S. Department of Defense on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Council on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability from 2012 to 2014. Dr. Pelletier also co-chaired the Laboratory Joint Working Group as an Air Force pathology consultant between 2010 and 2014 and contributed as a faculty member at the Emergency War Surgery Course.

From 2005 to 2012, Dr. Pelletier was a medical director with the U.S. Air Force, where he also served as an Air Force blood program officer and Air Force transfusion medicine consultant from 2006 to 2014. Notably, during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005, he initiated platelet collection in Balad, a significant advancement that replaced reliance on combat buddies for platelet transfusions during trauma situations. This innovation led to an order mandating the adoption of the Air Force’s platelet collection method across all military branches. Earlier roles include residency training in the U.S. Air Force from 1997 to 2001, following service as an internal medicine physician between 1994 and 1997.

Dr. Pelletier received a Bachelor of Science in laboratory medical technology from the University of Connecticut in Storrs in 1985 and a Doctor of Medicine from Rosalind Franklin University in 1991. He then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Wright-Patterson Medical Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base with the U.S. Air Force in 1992 and 1994, respectively, followed by a second residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium within the Military Health System in 2001. Additionally, Dr. Pelletier completed a fellowship in blood banking and transfusion medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale University, in 2005. He holds board certifications from the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology and in transfusion medicine.

Recognized as a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society for Clinical Pathology, Dr. Pelletier is also affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies. His professional involvement extends to subcommittees on hemotherapy, transfusion safety and patient blood management within the organization, as well as participation on its pediatric subcommittee.

Civically engaged, Dr. Pelletier has supported various outreach programs. He more recently served as a U.S. Department of Defense representative on the advisory committee on blood and tissue safety and availability with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and, among other involvement, was a member of the Integrated Consortium of Laboratory Networks under the U.S. Department of Defense from 2010 to 2014.

Dr. Pelletier has contributed to innovations in his field, notably receiving a provisional patent in 2024 for a method to improve the stability and shelf life of blood products, specifically red cell components. His achievements have been recognized through numerous awards over the past two decades, beginning with a Category 1 Laboratory of the Year Award in 2006. Among other accolades, Dr. Pelletier received multiple Golden Apple Awards from medical students at UF Health Shands Hospital between 2016 and 2021 and received a Department Clinical Excellence Award from the College of Medicine at UF in 2024.

Attributing his success to collaboration with excellent teams throughout his career, Dr. Pelletier notes that constructive criticism and input from colleagues continually shape his leadership. Looking ahead, he aims to advance care at Shands Hospital by focusing on improving massive transfusions, making these procedures safer not only for trauma patients but also those experiencing postpartum hemorrhage, pediatric emergencies, gastrointestinal bleeding or vascular catastrophes, such as ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms.
