In 2000, Dr. Shorter relocated to New York and joined the New York Veterinary Hospital as a surgeon and associate, where he honed his surgical skills and expanded his expertise.
In 2002, Dr. Shorter founded Kalvig & Shorter Veterinary Associates in Murray Hill, Manhattan. As the present owner and managing partner, he has cultivated an upscale practice renowned for its exceptional customer service and comprehensive approach to animal wellness and health care. His focus on internal disease modalities, behavioral challenges and surgical techniques has solidified his reputation as an expert in the field. Dr. Shorter’s commitment to disaster preparedness and first aid training has also been instrumental in his role as a consultant during significant events, such as the search and rescue efforts at Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks on the U.S.
A journey that began with an extensive education, Dr. Shorter obtained both a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1974 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1978 at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a career marked by excellence and innovation. Dr. Shorter’s commitment to his profession is further evidenced by his 1980 externship at the Animal Medical Center, which provided him with invaluable hands-on experience.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shorter has been actively involved in various professional organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Association for Black Veterinarians, and the National Veterinary Response Teams under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Meanwhile, his dedication to mentorship was evident through his work with pre-veterinary and veterinary students, as well as his involvement with the National Association for Black Veterinarians and the Tuskegee Alumni Association.
Dr. Shorter’s contributions extend beyond clinical practice by giving back to worthy causes. He notably serves as a veterinary advisor for Tails of Hope, a nonprofit organization supporting military and police dogs nationwide. Dr. Shorter’s innovative design of a mobile veterinary hospital for working dogs further underscores his commitment to advancing veterinary care for service animals.
