Beyond clinical practice, he plays a pivotal role as a principal investigator and researcher at the Geneva Foundation, leading AI and machine learning projects to advance military medic performance in battlefield scenarios. At Exonicus, he leads a team developing life-saving virtual and augmented reality technologies, managing a $2 million grant, and overseeing business development from marketing to client engagement. Additionally, with 12 years of military service, he holds the rank of Major and is currently fulfilling his reserve duties while attending a military conference in Orlando.
Dr. Couperus has held a range of leadership and clinical roles, including director of learning and development at 98point6 Inc. from 2022 to 2023, and chief medical officer at Exonicus. His military service includes positions as major, captain, and second lieutenant in Army Healthcare from 2012 to 2022, with roles in emergency medicine informatics and risk management at Madigan Army Medical Center. He served as an emergency medicine physician, clinical faculty, and research director at Madigan, where he led projects in virtual and augmented reality, AI decision support, and simulation from 2017 to 2022. His early medical career includes positions as a critical care nurse and ICU nurse at Kaleida Health and Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. Additionally, he has served on the board of GSACEP and completed a health policy fellowship with the AAEM Resident & Student Association. He has also contributed as an author of a number of studies, including “A Novel Task Trainer for Auricular Hematoma Repair” in Cureus and “Ready Medic One: A Feasibility Study of a Semi-Autonomous Virtual Reality Trauma Simulator” in Frontiers. His additional works cover topics like airway management, emergency diagnosis techniques, and bilingual aphasia, published in esteemed journals including the Medical Journal (US Army MEDCoE) and The Journal of Emergency Medicine.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Couperus received the GSACEP Rising Star Award in 2019, the Meritorious Service Medal in 2018, and three Army Commendation Medals in 2018. His accolades also include the Outstanding Academician and Clinician award in 2018, the Army Achievement Medal in 2017, and the Scholar of the Year Award in 2017. Earlier honors include the Charlie Hustle Award in 2016, the Morris & Sadie Stein Neuroanatomy Award in 2015, four Dean’s Letters of Commendation in 2014, induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 2014, and five undergraduate awards in 2006. Laying a solid educational foundation for these successes, he earned an associate degree in nursing from SUNY Canton in 2006 and a bachelor’s in nursing from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2010. She earned her Doctor of Medicine from the Jacobs School of Medicine in 2015, completed her emergency medicine residency at Madigan in 2018, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington Foster School of Business in 2023. Her certifications include the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, AMIA 10×10 Clinical Informatics, and American Board of Emergency Medicine Diplomate, along with advanced certifications in cardiac, trauma, neonatal, and pediatric life support.
Dr. Couperus attributes his success to an incredible support system, including his remarkable family, a brilliant mother, and a strong network of mentors who guided him at every step.
