Title: Professor and Residency Program Director
Company: University of Louisville
Location: Bradenton, Florida, United States

Haring Nauta, MD, PhD, FACS, professor and residency program director of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Louisville, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.

With five decades of experience, Dr. Nauta has established a successful career in health care and education, specializing in neurosurgery, education, and the treatment of complex conditions including degenerative disorders, normal pressure hydrocephalus, brain tumors, brain trauma, syringomyelia, Chiari malformation, and intractable visceral, cancer, and trigeminal neuralgia pain. He has served as professor and residency program director of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Louisville since 2014. In this role, he oversees the program’s certification and training through various credentialing bodies such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He also practices surgery and is on call for the level I trauma center while conducting research in neuroanatomy and clinical treatments for degenerative brain disorders and hydrocephalus. His experience also includes serving as a vascular surgeon in the department of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University in 1985 and as chairman of the division of surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston from 1983 to 1985. He was also on the faculty at the University of Toronto from 1982 to 1983. In addition to his clinical roles, he has contributed to professional literature, authoring articles, and book chapters in various journals.

Dr. Nauta is also a fellow of both the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Society for Neurological Surgery, and he served as president of the Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons in 2001. He laid a solid educational foundation, earning a bachelor’s degree from Duke University, followed by both his Doctor of Medicine and PhD from Case Western Reserve University in 1974. He completed a fellowship with renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Yasargil in Zurich, Switzerland, and both his residency and internship in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, Canada.

Reflecting on his path, Dr. Nauta developed two groundbreaking neurosurgical procedures during his tenure at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston: the superior ophthalmic vein approach for carotid-cavernous fistula and the punctate midline myelotomy for treating visceral pain. He was honored as a Kentucky Colonel for his role in preserving the credentialing of the Level I Trauma Center. He has also made significant contributions by emphasizing to his surgical colleagues the critical importance of state-level jurisdiction in medical-legal matters, clarifying that federal oversight often did not address the most pressing issues they faced.

Dr. Nauta’s research centers on neuroanatomy, leveraging his strong anatomical background to improve surgical outcomes by applying anatomy to enhance function. At Johns Hopkins, he specialized in stereotactic and vascular neurosurgery and co-founded the stereotactic radiosurgery program with the director of radiation and oncology. Through his work with the Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons, he also played a significant role in passing an amendment to the Texas state constitution, allowing the legislature to set limits on pain and suffering awards in malpractice cases. In the coming years, he hopes to continue practicing and teaching as long as his contributions are valued by his patients, students, and the broader neurosurgical community.
