Dr. Ysabel J.K. Wright, Veterinarian at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Wright has served as a veterinarian at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control since 2023, an open-intake municipal shelter where she manages the health and welfare of a diverse population of animals, including dogs and cats, as well as horses, goats, pigs, chickens and other birds. Her daily responsibilities encompass high-volume spay and neuter procedures, often completing spays in under 15 minutes and neuters in less than 10, while maintaining advanced anesthetic protocols and rigorous patient monitoring. Dr. Wright also performs specialized salvage surgeries, such as limb amputations, eye surgeries and tumor removals.
During peak kitten season, Dr. Wright oversees the intake and care of hundreds of animals on-site. Additionally, her expertise in emergency triage allows her to stabilize trauma patients brought in by animal control officers and prioritize life-saving measures over euthanasia whenever possible. Among other essential responsibilities, Dr. Wright’s forensic work, which includes examining victims of cruelty or neglect, allows her to provide expert testimony in court proceedings to advocate for animal welfare.
Before relocating to Florida in 2023 with her family from Ohio, Dr. Wright spent two years as a veterinarian in a small animal general practice, where she performed extensive surgeries, including orthopedic salvage procedures for clients unable to afford specialist care. Her earlier experience also included relief veterinary work across northern and southern Ohio as well as throughout South Florida from Orlando to Miami. Immediately following graduation from veterinary school in 2017, Dr. Wright practiced emergency medicine at a private facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, that had served her own family during her childhood. There, she managed critical internal medicine cases and emergency surgeries independently.
Dr. Wright’s academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry from Loyola University New Orleans in 2013. She then earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on Saint Kitts and Nevis in 2017, followed by the completion of a research-based Master of Science at Ross University in 2019 focused on bovine health within the One Health initiative. Dr. Wright’s graduate research examined how postpartum uterine infections affect milk production and community health outcomes within the farm-to-table process, findings that were subsequently published in a peer-reviewed journal article. She is currently a candidate for board specialty certification through the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, the highest specialty discipline within the field, reflecting her dedication to advancing preventive medicine from a holistic One Health perspective.
Active with professional organizations, Dr. Wright maintains membership in the Florida Animal Protection and Advocacy Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. In addition to her work-related affiliations, she is involved in community engagement. She volunteers at local schools through Junior Achievement career days, advocates and educates the public at fairs and downtown events about animal care and adoption, and collaborates with several organizations, such as The American National Red Cross, to implement pet first aid, CPR and disaster preparedness programs for county staff and residents. Dr. Wright’s civic involvement extends to supporting organizations that provide resources for new mothers, collaborating on child education programs and volunteering at local food banks during holiday meal distributions.
Perhaps most notably, as a native of Cincinnati, Dr. Wright founded the Veterinary Alliance Center for Accessible Care in 2024, a nonprofit organization based in Ohio dedicated to providing accessible veterinary services through pop-up clinics, telemedicine consultations and community outreach initiatives. Despite residing in Florida, she leads the Cincinnati-based team, where she personally funded its growth and acquired a permanent clinic building with support from her father. The organization aims not only to serve local communities but also to extend its impact internationally, including future outreach efforts planned for her husband’s home country, where food security depends on livestock health.
Dr. Wright’s commitment to service was shaped early by her parents’ example of volunteerism and reinforced by extended family members who serve as medical professionals, educators and public servants. The unwavering support of her husband has also been instrumental throughout her career transitions, nonprofit endeavors and family life.
As an expert in her field, Dr. Wright has produced scholarly output that has included research publications on bovine health as well as undergraduate studies on joint regeneration in poultry aimed at informing prosthetic development for human amputees, including veterans. These contributions underscore her commitment to bridging animal science with human medical advancement.
Throughout her career journey, from rural mixed-animal practice after graduation to high-volume shelter medicine, Dr. Wright has demonstrated exceptional adaptability and commitment to service. She is lauded for her ability to deliver creative solutions tailored to each case while upholding high standards of care regardless of financial limitations or resource constraints. Dr. Wright’s approach is informed by a deep respect for the perspectives of individuals from all backgrounds.
In partnership with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Dr. Wright participated in a televised interview on Despierta América to discuss pet nutrition. She has also been highlighted via numerous honors, including a Rising Star Award from the Florida Animal Protection and Advocacy Association in 2025, which was awarded for her notable work advancing animal welfare statewide. Dr. Wright also received accolades from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine following the launch of her nonprofit and a Volunteer Service Award. Furthermore, she was recognized by Town-Crier Newspaper Publishers Inc. for her hard work and dedication.
Looking ahead, Dr. Wright hopes to achieve board certification in preventive medicine while expanding the reach of her nonprofit organization both locally and abroad. She envisions creating mentorship opportunities for new graduates, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, and delivering continuing education seminars that inspire others within veterinary medicine. As a Black woman leader committed to service-driven excellence across communities, Dr. Wright remains steadfastly focused on broadening her impact while balancing career ambitions with family life.
