Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir has established himself as a distinguished figure in the field of thoracic surgery, currently serving as a minimally invasive thoracic surgery fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in the department of cardiothoracic surgery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, since 2024. In this role, he begins his day by checking on patients and reviewing laboratory results and imaging studies to ensure proper care. He also conducts morning rounds, develops individualized care plans and discusses them with attending surgeons. Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir’s participation in surgeries for both inpatients and outpatients allows him to refine his technical skills and clinical judgment, with the ultimate goal of becoming an attending surgeon and managing his own patients.
Before his current position, Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir was a thoracic oncology fellow at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, from 2023 to 2024. During this time, he also participated in the Optimizing Lung Cancer Care Through Education, Innovation and Partnership program, which is recognized as the Medtronic fellowship program. These experiences provided Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir with invaluable insights into the complexities of lung cancer care, further honing his expertise in thoracic surgery.
Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir’s academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from the University of Puerto Rico’s Río Piedras campus in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2012. He then pursued a master’s degree in public health at the graduate school of public health at the University of Puerto Rico, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2014. Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir’s medical education culminated with a Doctor of Medicine from Ponce Health Sciences University in 2018. These academic achievements laid a strong foundation for his career, equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the demanding field of medicine.
Following his degrees, Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir completed a surgical residency at Centro Médico Episcopal San Lucas in Puerto Rico between 2018 and 2023. This period was marked by significant professional growth as he navigated the challenges of practicing in an environment with a limited number of cardiothoracic surgeons. Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir’s dedication to building connections and attending key meetings was crucial to his success during this time.
Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir is also actively involved in various organizations, including the Gold Humanism Honor Society at Ponce Health Sciences University School of Medicine, the American Medical Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the American College of Surgeons, among others. His commitment to these organizations reflects his dedication to advancing the field of medicine.
In addition to his professional affiliations, Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir is passionate about community service and began participating in community outreach efforts during his residency at Centro Médico Episcopal San Lucas. He has also volunteered for medical rounds for unhoused individuals, demonstrating his commitment to providing care to underserved populations.
Throughout his career, Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir has been recognized for his contributions to medical research and practice. He received first place for his poster presentation at the 10th Vascular Symposium: Highlights in Vascular and Endovascular Pathologies for “Plantar Artery Bypass for Chronic Limb Threatening Ischemia: Patency and Limb Salvage” in 2021. Earlier, Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir won Best Clinical Research Study at PHSU/St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in 2016 and was honored with the Clinical Distinction Honor Award from Ponce Health Sciences University School of Medicine in 2018. Looking ahead, Dr. Aboukheir Aboukheir envisions continued success, practicing cardiothoracic surgery at an academic institution where he can mentor future surgeons while continuing to excel professionally and personally.
