Dr. Patterson has established a distinguished career in laboratory medicine, currently serving as the laboratory medical director at TridentCare California Lab since 2024. In this capacity, he oversees clinical operations and ensures the highest standards of laboratory practice. Dr. Patterson’s expertise in managing complex client relationships is widely recognized, particularly his ability to address concerns from clients who feel dissatisfied with service outcomes.

Since joining Trident Care, Dr. Patterson’s unique skill set in resolving issues and connecting with clients has been instrumental in fostering effective collaboration and maintaining client trust. His authority as a senior physician allows him to intervene directly, alleviating concerns and ensuring positive resolutions. Notably, the need for Dr. Patterson’s intervention has lessened due to improved systems and fewer customer problems, but his reputation for handling challenging situations remains a cornerstone of his professional identity.

Having formerly served as the medical director at Diagnostic Laboratories & Radiology (now TridentCare) from 2012 to 2019, Dr. Patterson was responsible for directing laboratory operations across Arizona, contributing significantly to the organization’s growth and reputation. His leadership was highly valued, with colleagues frequently seeking his assistance to resolve client issues on a daily basis. The smaller scale of the previous company allowed for more direct involvement in client care, which was instrumental in Dr. Patterson’s ability to hone his skills in customer relations and problem-solving.

Dr. Patterson’s career spans over 45 years in the field of laboratory medicine and pathology. He began practicing medicine in 1967 after earning his medical degree. Following advice from his father and grandfather, he started in general practice before transitioning to laboratory medicine around 1973. Dr. Patterson worked extensively in hospital settings for approximately two decades before specializing in locum tenens work, traveling to provide coverage for physicians and pathologists on leave. This experience broadened his expertise and reinforced his commitment to ensuring quality care across diverse healthcare environments.

Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Patterson’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in 1964, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alberta in 1967 and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Calgary in 1987. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the College of American Pathologists and the American Society for Clinical Pathology, both since 1975. These affiliations reflect Dr. Patterson’s ongoing commitment to advancing standards within the field of pathology and laboratory medicine.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Dr. Patterson is dedicated to civic engagement as a donor to Doctors Without Borders. His contributions support global health initiatives and underscore his commitment to humanitarian causes.

Dr. Patterson is also an accomplished author, having published “Becoming Good Stewards of Antibiotics: Changing the Way We Look at Things” via Cheval Press in 2024 and “Living a Whole Life: Connecting Body, Mind and Spirit” also via Cheval Press in 2025. These works reflect his holistic approach to medicine and stewardship within healthcare.

Lauded for his success and expertise, Dr. Patterson’s achievements have been recognized by peers and industry organizations alike. In 2016, he received the Best Practice Award from the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, acknowledging his excellence in clinical practice. Dr. Patterson attributes much of his success to his ability to truly listen, an approach that distinguishes him from others who may simply wait for their turn to speak. By understanding others’ perspectives and meeting them where they are, he has built lasting professional relationships and achieved notable results throughout his career.

Dr. Patterson’s dedication to patient care, innovation in laboratory medicine and commitment to professional development have defined his legacy within the field. Looking ahead, he aims to complete the Irvine laboratory project currently under construction, a facility designed with advanced automation technology, and subsequently launch a new business line that will establish the lab as a reference facility for smaller laboratories across Orange County alongside his group vice president and supervisor.
