He currently serves as health care consultant at FirstThought, a position he has held since 2022, president and owner of Durham Prosthodontics since 2012, and adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 2013. Additionally, he has been faculty at ZimVie since 2010, a lecturer at Nobel Biocare since 2014, and an expert witness in legal services since 2013. His consulting work primarily focuses on dental implant companies, while his teaching roles involve delivering lectures in his areas of expertise. He provides critical insights in legal cases related to board reviews and disciplinary actions for dental professionals as an expert witness and has contributed to various minor consulting projects within the dental industry.
Dr. Cunningham’s experience includes roles as lecturer for DENTSPLY Implants from 2014 to 2017, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Oklahoma from 2014 to 2015, and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at West Virginia University from 2012 to 2014. He served as assistant director and assistant professor of graduate prosthodontics at WVU from 2009 to 2012 and has also worked in private practice general dentistry with Jay E. Cunningham DDS from 2001 to 2012, and Carlos Sanchez DDS PA from 2002 to 2006. He was assistant director of graduate prosthodontics at WVU School of Dentistry from 2011 to 2012 and has held leadership positions in the Rotary Club of Southwest Durham, serving as vice president in 2015 and president in 2016, and past president and member from 2012 to 2018.
Additionally, Dr. Cunningham is involved with the Rotary Club of Southwest Durham, where he served as president in 2016, and the American College of Prosthodontics and the American Dental Association. He has been a member of the Durham-Orange Dental Society since 2012, serving as president in 2016, and participates in several study clubs, including the Seattle Study Club of Chapel Hill since 2012 and the John Dilday Study Club of Durham since 2016. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in 2015 and a fellow of the American College of Prosthodontics in 2015. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was honored as Best Dentist of America in 2024, Top Dentist by Durham Magazine from 2014 to 2024, and the Rotary Club of Southwest Durham Paul Harris Fellow in 2016. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from West Virginia University in 1996, a Doctor of Dental Science from West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 2000, a Master of Science in Prosthodontics from West Virginia University in 2009, and multiple certifications, including Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in 2015.
Dr. Cunningham takes great pride in achieving his board certification in 2015, as well as being honored with the prestigious American College of Prosthodontics Private Practitioner Award, an annual accolade given to only four practitioners, in 2018. He was also recognized in the 2024 Best Dentist of America listing. He attributes his success to hard work, attention to detail, and a passion for the pursuit of excellence. He has also learned the importance of not taking anything for granted and avoiding overconfidence, recognizing that challenges can arise unexpectedly and quickly humble even the most prepared professionals. Looking to the future, he is looking to expand his practice by bringing in another associate and opening a new location.
