Adebayo Christian Atanda, MD, invasive cardiologist and director of advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Valley Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cardiology.
Beginning his professional journey 15 years ago in his home country of Nigeria, Dr. Atanda has rapidly established himself as a trusted figure in the field of cardiology. He was motivated to pursue this field when he lost a close relative to cardiomyopathy when he was only six years old. Dr. Atanda initially contributed as a house officer and medical intern at University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria, and a senior house officer at Federal Medical Center. In 2011, he began a two-year tenure as a resident medical officer at First Cardiology Consultants. Immigrating to the United States in 2014, Dr. Atanda joined Queens Heart Institute as a clinical research coordinator.
Since 2022, Dr. Atanda has served as an invasive cardiologist and the director of advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Valley Health. In this position, he works directly with patients who have complex heart conditions, such as those requiring heart transplants or mechanical heart implants. Dr. Atanda performs biopsies and teaches patients how to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Notably, he is also passionate about research into heart conditions. Dr. Atanda has collaborated with numerous other experts in his industry to complete research and publish it in professional journals. He is currently exploring the link between coronary artery disease and cardiac amyloidosis, and he has previously had his research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.
Dr. Atanda’s achievements have been made possible in part due to a strong academic background, beginning with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Ilorin. After moving to the United States, he completed a residency at Howard University Hospital in 2018 and a fellowship in general cardiology at the George Washington University Hospital in 2021. Most recently, Dr. Atanda finished a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Additionally, he has earned board certification in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and nuclear cardiology.
In addition to his education, Dr. Atanda has continued building his knowledge through membership in several professional organizations. He is actively involved in the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American Medical Association, the Heart Failure Society of America, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the American Society of Echocardiography. Dr. Atanda has previously held the role of reviewer for the National Medical Association and editor for such publications as The Cureus Journal of Medical Science and the American Journal of the Medical Sciences.
To commemorate Dr. Atanda’s many accomplishments, he has received numerous accolades. He was presented with the Young Investigator Award by the National Medical Association and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Atanda earned first place in the Institutional Prize for Most Outstanding Scholarly Activities in 2017. In 2018, he was honored with the National Institutes of Health and National Medical Association Travel Award, the Peer Award for Most Likely to Change the Medical World, and the Most Outstanding Research/Mentorship Activities Award from Howard University Hospital’s department of internal medicine. In recent years, Dr. Atanda has accepted The George Washington University’s Annual Research Award, the Dr. Cyrus Katzen Foundation Young Investigator Award, and the Dr. Jay Brown Best Abstract Award. He attributes his success to dedication to his work, a relentless drive for self-improvement and his strong faith.
Outside of his career, Dr. Atanda enjoys playing guitar and spending time with his spouse and four children. He regularly offers his advice as a volunteer mentor and researcher, helping spread knowledge on heart problems to the wider population. Moving into the future, Dr. Atanda plans to continue researching and implementing innovative solutions to a variety of cardiology problems. He remains deeply committed to the goal of improving health outcomes for all patients suffering from heart conditions.
