Dr. Caryl J. Guth, Integrative Medicine Specialist and Anesthesiologist at the Center for Integrative Medicine has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in holistic medicine.

When Dr. Guth entered her profession in 1962, she had one goal: to prove that women can serve society as effectively as men. Her can-do attitude was an inspiration to other women and it led her in achieving tremendous success over the last five decades. Her accomplishments to date include establishing and voluntarily consulting for the integrative medicine program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and funding published research on the benefits of low EMF on stem cells. In addition, she achieved prominent roles in the field of anesthesiology, including board of directors member for the Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, instructor for Radboud University, fellow in anesthesiology for QVH, and instructor in anesthesiology at Wake Forest University. She retired from her work as a physician in 2002; however she has continued to work in the healthcare field in the area of holistic and integrative medicine, which she has been practicing since 1998. In addition, Dr. Guth is an independent wellness consultant who believes that optimal health can be achieved through lifestyle choices rather than being reliant on medication. She is also a current member of the Board of Science and Policy Advisers for the American Council on Science and Health.

Regarded by industry experts for her impactful work within her professional community, Dr. Guth is known in particular for her previous work with Wake Forest University, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the San Mateo County Medical Association, the California Medical Association, and the California Society of Anesthesiology. At Wake Forest University, she has served in a number of positions, including member of the executive committee for the Dianne Dailey Golf Learning Center, member of the board of directors for the deacon club, member of the president’s club, member of the dean’s leadership council for the medical alumni association, member of the board of directors for the medical alumni association, and president of the board for the medical alumni association, among other roles. After serving a maximum term, she was granted lifetime membership of the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Board of Visitors. In addition, she is currently a member of the Wake Forest University Coliseum Transition Committee. For the American Society of Anesthesiology, Dr. Guth notably served as a delegate, a committee chair on professional diversity, committee chair on communications, and annual meeting program organizer. Dr. Guth shared her early expertise with the San Mateo County Medical Association in the 1980s. She was a director of the board for two years and chair of the medical staff affairs committee. For the California Medical Association, she was the committee chair on special societies. Lastly, Dr. Guth served as president, president-elect, assistant treasurer, and bulletin editor for the California Society of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Guth is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology whose career experiences have been supported by her education, which includes an Associate of Arts from Mars Hill College (now Mars Hill University), a Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest University and an MD from Wake Forest University. In recognition of her professional excellence, she was the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, a Loyal Deacon Award from the Deacon Club at Wake Forest University, a North Carolina Baptist Heritage Award from the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and a Distinguished Service Award from the Wake Forest Medical Alumni Association. She also received a Deacon Club Member of the Year Award. Throughout the duration of her career, the one highlight that stood out the most for Dr. Guth was being recognized by her California Anesthesiology colleagues as deserving a special Distinguished Service Award at their annual convention. Her alma mater, Mars Hill University has honored her with an Alumna of the Year Award.

In her retirement, Dr. Guth is incredibly involved with Wake Forest University athletics. She is involved with providing scholarships to women’s golf and women’s basketball. She is also an avid sports fan of many of its other teams, including men’s basketball and men’s football. She spends her free time attending as many sporting events that she can with the university. Dr. Guth is also very active in industry projects in her retirement. Currently, she is working on developing a new product to help the body’s natural ability to heal, as it has been proven that people lose the capability to heal up to 10 percent per decade as they age. In the years to come, she intends to continue in her current work while promoting a healthy lifestyle through her own health practices.
