Enjoying a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in the mental health field, Dr. Grace has established himself as an expert in general adult psychiatry and addiction medicine. Leveraging his expertise, he has served as a private practice consulting psychiatrist since 1988 and as the medical director at Acacia Network/Promesa/Alba De Vida in Buffalo, New York, since 2016. Additionally, since 2021, Dr. Grace has been instrumental as a psychiatrist of behavioral health and as the medical director of the outpatient mental health clinic at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in Niagara Falls, New York. In this capacity, he continues to provide clinical care while guiding the direction of outpatient services.
Before joining the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Grace was an attending psychiatrist at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center from 2017 to 2021, after previously serving as the clinical director between 1991 and 2017. His tenure at the center is among his proudest achievements. Over more than 25 years as the director of this regional psychiatric hospital, he contributed to improving countless lives through compassionate care and leadership. Among Dr. Grace’s earlier roles at the center, he served as the chief of psychiatry and as the director of research from 1988 to 1990.
Dr. Grace’s professional journey also included consulting psychiatrist positions at Northwest Community Mental Health Center from 1990 to 2014 and the Erie County Medical Center Corporation Inpatient Detoxification Unit between 1988 and 2011. He was also the medical director for Liberty Healthcare Corporation’s Buffalo Group from 1988 to 1995. For the two previous years, between 1986 and 1988, Dr. Grace served as the chief of forensic psychiatry and as the director of correctional health services. In these capacities, he supervised a methadone maintenance program and an outpatient chemical dependency treatment program while overseeing medical and psychiatric care for inmates and evaluating competency to stand trial for the county.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Grace worked as an attending staff psychiatrist and clinical chief of unit for Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Montefiore Einstein/Rikers Island Mental Health Service from 1985 to 1988. He also held part-time attending psychiatrist positions with Placer County Mental Health Services and Sacramento County Jail through UC Davis Health between 1984 and 1985 after completing his residency as a senior psychiatric resident for inpatient services at UC Davis Health.
In academia, Dr. Grace taught students as an assistant professor of psychiatry at Westchester County Medical Center with New York Medical College in Valhalla from 1986 to 1990. He then joined the State University of New York in Buffalo as a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry between 1988 and 1990.
Dr. Grace’s academic foundation has been integral to his professional success. He graduated as salutatorian from Mumford High School in Detroit, Michigan, in 1973. He then acquired an Associate of Science from Highland Park Community College in 1974 and a Bachelor of Science in zoology from the University of Michigan in 1975, followed by postgraduate training and a Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University in 1977 and 1981, respectively. From there, Dr. Grace completed an internship in categorical medicine and a residency in psychiatry at UC Davis Health in 1982 and 1985, respectively, as well as a research fellowship in biological and psychopharmacology of psychiatry from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Montefiore Einstein in 1986. Dr. Grace has also received numerous professional credentials. Among them, he has garnered multiple state medical licenses, certification in alcoholism and other drug dependencies by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and national provider identifier recognition.
Committed to advancing the field, Dr. Grace maintains involvement in professional organizations. He is recognized as a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, as a life fellow of The American College of Forensic Examiners Institute, and through membership with the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American College of Mental Health Administration and, among others, the American Board of Disability Analysts. Dr. Grace previously held various leadership positions as well, including as the president and chair of the ethics committee for the Western New York Psychiatric Society.
Dr. Grace’s contributions extend beyond clinical practice into scholarship and public engagement. He has authored or contributed to numerous articles published in professional journals, including Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience. Dr. Grace has also presented on community health topics, such as “Buffalo Health Matters!…A Community Conversation” at Bennett High School in Buffalo, and has participated as a panelist on issues ranging from gun violence awareness to suicide prevention.
Active civic engagement is also central to Dr. Grace’s life. Most notably, he has maintained long-standing involvement with ELIM Christian Fellowship in Buffalo since the early 1980s.
Dr. Grace’s expertise has been recognized through numerous awards, including a New York Mental Health Professional Service Award by S.E.N.S.E.S. of Buffalo in 2013, a Service Award from the TRIO Program at Canisius University in 2014, a Difference-Maker Award at the Black Tie for Black History Awards in 2018, a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Eighth Annual Men of Integrity Awards in 2018, and a 47th Buffalo Black Achievers Award in 2019. Additionally, he has received several Distinguished Service Awards from local mental health associations.
Throughout his career, Dr. Grace has witnessed significant changes in mental health care delivery. He notes the expansion of available tools, such as new medications, but emphasizes the enduring importance of person-to-person therapy and direct patient contact. Dr. Grace credits much of his success to his faith, along with steadfast support from family, including his spouse, and colleagues who have encouraged him throughout his journey.
Looking ahead, Dr. Grace aims to continue making meaningful contributions as a medical physician specializing in general adult psychiatry and addiction medicine, fields where he finds profound reward.
