Before his current role, Dr. Poudel spent over three years as a graduate research assistant at Mississippi between 2019 and 2023. Previously, he worked for Heifer International in Nepal. Hired in 2015 as a veterinary officer, he quickly pivoted into the role of project coordinator from 2015 to 2018. In this capacity, Dr. Poudel managed initiatives to improve livestock health and agricultural productivity, including field research trials in poultry and swine, drawing on his background as a veterinarian and researcher.
During his tenure at Heifer International, Dr. Poudel was involved in a pioneering research project addressing Cysticercus cellulosae infection in pigs, a disease caused by the pork tapeworm. During a two-and-a-half-year clinical trial, he investigated medication-based interventions to reduce parasite prevalence among swine populations, all to improve livestock health outcomes.
Dr. Poudel’s academic achievements have played a pivotal role in shaping his career trajectory. He earned a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in animal husbandry from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Ludhiana, India, in 2015. He later acquired a Master of Science in poultry science in 2020 and a Doctor of Philosophy in poultry science in 2023 from Mississippi State University. Dr. Poudel’s graduate studies provided him with advanced knowledge and research skills that have directly contributed to his success as a scientist and educator.
In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Poudel holds several professional certifications that underscore his commitment to excellence in veterinary practice and emergency response. In 2015, he became certified under the Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards program through the U.S. Agency for International Development. That same year, Dr. Poudel became registered as a veterinary doctor by the Nepal Veterinary Council. He speaks native Nepali, is proficient in both English and Hindi, and speaks some Punjabi.
Dr. Poudel is an active member of the Poultry Science Association, reflecting both his professional standing and ongoing engagement with advancements in poultry science. His scholarly output includes co-authorship of several peer-reviewed publications that have advanced knowledge within animal science and poultry research. Dr. Poudel has contributed to such publications as PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, Animal Feed Science and Technology, and the Journal of Applied Poultry Research. Furthermore, Dr. Poudel served as a reviewer for the Journal of Applied Poultry Research and the Journal of Veterinary Medicine and Science.
Throughout his career, Dr. Poudel has been recognized for his extensive expertise in laying hen nutrition. He was the recipient of the Heifer International Impact Award in 2015, several Travel Grants and a Travel Award between 2022 and 2023, and was honored with a Young Scientist Award from World Poultry Congress in 2022. Dr. Poudel attributes his accomplishments to an inquisitive nature, unwavering passion for science and persistent curiosity. Inspired by childhood experiences observing animals in rural environments, he developed a lifelong interest in animal behavior, health and physiology. He believes agriculture is fundamental to human survival, yet often underappreciated within society.
Dr. Poudel’s legacy is defined by scientific rigor, dedication to service and an enduring commitment to advancing animal health for the benefit of society at large.
