He then earned a Doctor of Medicine from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas, graduating in 1998. Dr. Cummings continued his postgraduate training at Scott & White Memorial Hospital, now Baylor Scott White Health, in Temple, Texas, where he completed both his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in medical oncology by 2003. He holds board certification in medical oncology from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Cummings maintains active membership in several prominent professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. His engagement with these groups reflects his commitment to staying abreast of advancements in cancer care and contributing to broader professional dialogues.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Cummings is deeply committed to civic engagement and advocacy. He is actively involved with organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life and the Susan B. Komen Foundation, underscoring his dedication to cancer advocacy and community outreach. His volunteerism extends to Scouting America, where he served on the board of directors and received the Silver Beaver Award. Dr. Cummings has also been affiliated with The Mayflower Society, Southland Baptist Church and Buckner International and has held leadership roles with the San Angelo Symphony, earning a Service Award for his contributions. Moreover, Dr. Cummings’s connection to his alma mater, Baylor University, remains strong through his service on the alum association board and the advisory board for the College of Arts & Sciences.

Dr. Cummings’s commitment has been recognized with honors, including induction into the President’s Club and the 1845 Society at Baylor University. He credits much of his success to his family’s unwavering support. His father’s service as a federal judge appointed by President Ronald Reagan, and his mother’s career as a nurse, provided him with early exposure to public service and excellence in health care. The encouragement from his family, along with collaborative relationships with colleagues and nurses throughout his career, has been integral to Dr. Cummings’s achievements.
