Additionally, Dr. Spence has been a neurological surgeon at INTEGRIS Health since 2023. His expertise in complex reconstructive spine surgery and neurosurgical services has positioned him as a leader in his field. He is recognized for his dedication to addressing disparities in health care access, especially for those facing delayed diagnoses due to limited resources. Dr. Spence’s influence extends beyond clinical practice through academic contributions. From 2022 to 2023, Dr. Spence was a clinical assistant professor at OU Health in Oklahoma City, where he contributed to the education of future medical professionals. Dr. Spence’s leadership experience also included serving as surgery committee chair at Summit Medical Center in Edmond between 2014 and 2022, and as a neurosurgeon in his own practice at Caple A. Spence MD PC in Midwest City, for more than a decade, from 2008 to 2022, providing specialized care to patients with complex neurological conditions.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Spence was the co-medical director of neurosurgery at Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City from 2010 to 2016, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care protocols. He held the same title at Iowa Spine and Brain Institute in Waterloo between 2005 and 2008, contributing to the development of advanced neurosurgical programs.

Dr. Spence’s educational background has been instrumental in shaping his approach to medicine and leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in physiological psychology from New York University, awarded in 1991, a Doctor of Medicine from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 1995, followed by a residency in neurological surgery at the school of medicine and health sciences at The George Washington University in 2002 and a postdoctoral fellowship in complex reconstructive spinal surgery at the University of South Florida in 2003. Additionally, Dr. Spence earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2022, equipping him with business acumen that enhances his ability to implement systemic solutions within health care organizations.

In addition to his formal education, Dr. Spence has maintained several certifications that reflect his commitment to ongoing professional development. He has held board certification in neurological surgery from the American Board of Neurological Surgery since 2008, is a certified commercial investment member from The CCIM Institute since 2019, and received credentials in artificial intelligence in health care fundamentals and applications from MIT Professional Education in 2024.

Beyond his clinical and academic pursuits, Dr. Spence has demonstrated civic engagement through service on the MBA advisory board at the University of Central Oklahoma. His previous service included membership on the board of directors for the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City from 2010 to 2013 and the Summit Medical Center from 2010 to 2022.

As a recognized leader in his field, Dr. Spence has been serving as an editorial board member for the Journal of Neurological Surgery Reports and as a journal article reviewer for the Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group, both since 2023.

Dr. Spence’s achievements have been recognized with numerous honors, including being named Top Doctor in Oklahoma by Oklahoma Magazine annually from 2015 through 2025 and receiving the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Oklahoma Neurosurgical Society in 2024. He attributes much of his success to his formative years growing up and attending school in New York City, where exposure to robust health care systems and accomplished physicians instilled in him high standards for patient care.

Looking ahead, Dr. Spence is dedicated to organizing health system components that will facilitate improved access to neurological and neurosurgical services throughout Oklahoma. His primary objective remains elevating health care quality and accessibility so that future generations benefit from advancements enabled by collaborative efforts within the medical community.
