Duarte G. Machado, Director of Program Excellence and Recognition at Hartford HealthCare, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Health Care.

Dr. Machado has made significant strides in neurology, particularly in the realm of movement disorders. Since 2016, he has served as the director of program excellence and recognition at Hartford HealthCare’s Chase Family Movement Disorders Center. Dr. Machado’s journey began with a vision to create a center that would revolutionize patient care by bringing services directly into communities rather than centralizing them in one location. This innovative approach has led to the establishment of five centers across Connecticut, making it one of the largest specialty centers for movement disorder care in the U.S. The center offers comprehensive clinical care and a range of supportive services, including advanced treatment options like deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound.

Before joining Hartford HealthCare’s Chase Family Movement Disorders Center, Dr. Machado was an assistant clinical professor in the division of movement disorders in the school of medicine at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, from 2009 to 2016. During this time, he became an expert in a vast spectrum of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, dystonia, restless leg syndrome and Stiff-Person Syndrome. Dr. Machado’s dedication to advancing medical knowledge was evident in his commitment to teaching medical students, residents and fellows.

Dr. Machado’s academic journey laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 2001 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Connecticut in Stamford in 2005. Dr. Machado’s postgraduate training included an internal medicine residency and a neurology residency at Yale University in 2006 and 2009, respectively. He also received board certification in neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Inc., underscoring his expertise in the field.

Dr. Machado’s work has been recognized with a Healthcare Equity Scholarship from the American Academy of Neurology and the David Wooster Medal from Connecticut Masons. He has also participated in educational programs, including the Yale School of Medicine’s Educational Fellowship Program and the Advanced Care Training Program offered by the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Throughout his career, Dr. Machado has been actively involved with numerous professional organizations, including the International Neurotoxin Association, the International Association of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, the American Parkinson’s Disease Association and the American Academy of Neurology. Additionally, he has served on various boards, such as the American Parkinson’s Disease Association’s Connecticut chapter and the medical advisory board for the Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Machado is deeply committed to civic engagement. He is involved with organizations such as the Parkinson’s Foundation and the National Ataxia Foundation. He has also delivered speeches at several events, including the annual symposium for the Parkinson’s Foundation and the Connecticut chapter of the International Essential Tremor Foundation.

Looking ahead, Dr. Machado envisions transforming his center into a destination facility with enhanced services and national branding. By fostering partnerships with national organizations, he aims to elevate the organization’s status to achieve widespread recognition while continuing to provide exceptional care for patients with movement disorders.
