Garrison B. Smith, MD, FACS, surgeon at West Tennessee Healthcare, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care and robotic surgery.
Dr. Smith has established a successful career in health care and surgery, specializing in robotic surgery and foregut hernias. Since 2019, he has served as a robotic general surgeon at West Tennessee Healthcare, where he provides advanced surgical procedures using state-of-the-art technology. His experience also includes working as a general surgeon with Jackson Surgical Associates. Additionally, he has been actively involved with West Tennessee Healthcare since 2021 and served as a certified member of the American Foregut Society since 2020. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Tennessee Medical Association, and a volunteer professor at Bethel University in Tennessee. In addition, he sponsors Hospice House and is affiliated with the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, which he joined in 2012.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Smith has been honored with the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012, the Distinguished UT Student Service Award in 2007, the Imhotep Society Leadership Service Award in 2006, and the Department of Surgery Outstanding Performance Award. He established a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from Union University in 2000 and a Doctor of Medicine from the Health Science Center College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee in 2007. He then completed his surgery residency with the University of Tennessee’s Memphis Department of Surgery from 2007 to 2012. Additional certifications include LINX Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation, transanal minimally invasive surgery, fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery, and Da Vinci robotic surgery. He also holds a certificate in health care policy and leadership from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Reflecting on his path, Dr. Smith has always had a passion for hands-on work and a desire to make an immediate, meaningful impact on patients’ lives. He thrives in the dynamic nature of surgery, constantly updating his skills to remain at the forefront of his field. He attributes his success to his technical expertise, surgical judgment, and strong interpersonal skills, which help him connect with patients and collaborate effectively with colleagues. Outside of his professional life, he takes pride in being a devoted husband and father. Looking ahead, he aspires to establish a foregut center to further advance the field.
