Monica Quinn Newton, DO, Program Director at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Health Care.
Dr. Newton, a doctor of osteopathic medicine and family medicine residency program director at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group, has been instrumental in her leading position since 2018. Her role encompasses managing a significant residency program that includes over 35 residents and a dozen faculty physicians and oversees approximately 50 physicians. Among other obligations, she oversees all aspects of human resources related to the resident physicians, curriculum and faculty development. Dr. Newton’s expertise in health care spans over two decades and has included various positions, including chair and service line director at Primary and Urgent Care, chief of primary care at Southern Market, and director of the Physicians Group Patient Center Medical Home Initiative. She also taught the family medicine residency program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for over a decade, beginning in 2000.
In preparation for her career in the industry, Dr. Newton achieved a Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine and psychology at Auburn University in 1993 and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University in 1997. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include a residency from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a fellowship in underserved medicine from the University of California San Diego in 2006, and a second fellowship in obstetrics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Continuing her studies, Dr. Newton received a Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama Birmingham in 2000. She also holds a master’s certificate from Thomas Jefferson University’s college of population health and is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
As part of her continued commitments to health care, Dr. Newton has been active with the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. She has also served as the president of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and the chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission of Education. As a leader in her community, Dr. Newton has proudly served with the United Way, co-chairing the mental and behavioral health committee and winning numerous awards for her efforts to reduce suicide. Among other achievements, she received a State Award for establishing a public-private partnership in Alabama, a free clinic in 2007 known as the Family Doc in a Bus. However, Dr. Newton is most proud of the success she has received in teaching and training physicians.
