Dr. Varma is a prominent physician who specializes in cardiology. Since 2015, he has been an advanced heart failure cardiologist and medical director of cardio-oncology at The Heart Group at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. In his role, he treats patients with advanced heart failure and manages cancer patients with various cardiovascular complications. He also provides elite care to heart failure patients on the cardiovascular floor and cardiac intensive care unit who are extremely ill, awaiting heart pumps, or being prepared for heart transplantation.
Before joining The Heart Group, Dr. Varma was affiliated with VCU Health System in 2014 as an assistant professor of medicine and as a fellow of advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation from 2014 to 2015. He also held roles as a physician-scientist, fellow in cardiovascular medicine and resident physician at VCU Health System beginning in 2006.
In preparation for his medical career, Dr. Varma received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 and a Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in physiology and biophysics from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 and 2012, respectively. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Varma’s ability to garner a doctorate while completing his cardiology fellowship was a significant accomplishment, as he wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the scientific principles behind the research he was involved in while working with pharmaceutical companies and their clinical trials. Dr. Varma is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, and advanced heart failure and cardiac transplant.
Besides his full-time commitments, Dr. Varma remains active in clinical trials to remain at the forefront of medicine and advancing treatment procedures for cardiovascular disease. He is also pursuing a Master of Business Administration in healthcare administration and management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His goal is to advance his career further and hold an administrative position that will enable him to improve health care policies for future generations. Dr. Varma also notes that many administrators do not have the medical background to truly understand patients and ensure proper care.
Dr. Varma is recognized as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Failure Society of America. He is also a member of the American Heart Association. These memberships have allowed him to network with like-minded individuals within his specialty. Dr. Varma’s desire to pursue a career in cardiology stems from the loss of his grandfather to heart failure as a teenager, an experience that left a long-lasting impression on him and his desire to enter this specific area of medicine.
In light of his accomplishments, Dr. Varma has been recognized among the Top 40 Physicians Under 40 by the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 2018 and as a Top Doctor in America by Castle Connolly every year between 2018 and 2020. He attributes his success to the support of his family and parents, who have been there through his medical journey and have inspired him to be the best physician he can be.
