Dr. Matthew M. Willis, physician at Advanced Functional Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in internal medicine.

A successful doctor and business owner, Matthew Willis, DC, DABCI (Diplomate Internist), is committed to providing patients with a better quality of life by treating the root cause of chronic disease through Functional Medicine. Dr. Willis began his medical education at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Human Development in 2007, and a Bachelor of Science in pre-medical studies in 2009. After graduating with a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine from the National University of Health Sciences in Chicago, Illinois, in 2013, he obtained an additional four-year national board certification in Internal Medicine with an emphasis in Functional Medicine, earning the title of Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Internists (DABCI), Dr. Willis began working as a physician. In 2014, he founded Advanced Functional Medicine, with locations across California, including Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

For Dr. Willis, the most advantageous aspect of his career is its ability to break the confines of traditional medicine. At Advanced Functional Medicine, he spends time with patients and listens to not only their physical symptoms but also the mental, emotional and even spiritual impact of those symptoms. Through his hands-on approach, Dr. Willis can determine what specific diagnostic tests are necessary to determine the root cause of the symptoms and create a customized care plan tailored to the individual.

Along with being a practicing doctor, Dr. Willis is a recognized leader, speaker, author, educator and advocate in his field. He is a speaker for the nonprofit group Doctors for Health and Wellness and has been a regular medical contributor on many functional medicine and integrative health sites around the country. To remain current in his field, he maintains memberships to the Institute for Functional Medicine, the Council on Diagnosis of Internal Disorders, the Alzheimer’s Family Organization, the American Diabetes Association and the Cancer Control Society.

Passionate about finding new ways to treat common conditions, Dr. Willis authored the best-selling book, “The Truth About Type 2 Diabetes,” which explores the condition through the lens of functional medicine. For his exemplary conduct in medicine, Dr. Willis has won many awards, including Best of Medical Clinics in San Diego, Best of Diabetes Care in Southern California, Favorite Health Speaker from the Wellness Foundation, Clinician of the Year from Apex Energetics and Best Medical Office three years in a row.

Outside of his medical career, Dr. Willis is a father of three boys who are all active in baseball. He and his wife, Nicole, often work together generously helping others, including the people at their church. They participate in donation drives to benefit the boys’ athletics, and they give to anyone in need. In the future, he hopes to expand Advanced Functional Medicine to continue to provide prescriptive drug alternatives to an otherwise overmedicated society.
