His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in pre-professional sciences at the University of Notre Dame in 1979. Focused on dentistry, he pursued a Master of Science in oral biology and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Louisville in 1983. Expanding his expertise, Dr. Edelen completed a residency in orthodontics at his graduate alma mater.
Launching his professional career as an assistant professor in the University of Louisville’s Department of Orthodontics, Dr. Edelen simultaneously established his namesake private practice, Edelen Orthodontics. His association with the aforementioned university grew, evolving into a role as a clinical associate professor before retiring in 2021. His contributions to orthodontics are recognized through publications in renowned journals like the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Beyond his practice, Dr. Edelen serves as an orthodontic consultant for the Kentucky Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs’ Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomaly Team.
To stay updated in his field, Dr. Edelen is actively involved with numerous professional organizations, including the Kentucky Association of Orthodontists, the University of Louisville Orthodontists, the University of Louisville Orthodontic Alumni Association, the Louisville Dental Society, Kentucky Dental Association, American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists and Southern Association of Orthodontists. His achievements have earned him recognition from various bodies, such as the Consumer Research Council of America and Kentucky Monthly Magazine. In 2018, the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Louisville honored him as a Distinguished Alumni. In 2021, the National Consumer Advisory Board recognized him as one of America’s Best Dentists.
Amidst his career milestones, Dr. Edelen takes immense pride in mentoring residents from diverse backgrounds. His success is rooted in effective communication with referring doctors and ensuring the timely completion of patient treatments. Throughout his career, he cherishes the relationships built with patients and his dedicated staff, considering them blessings in his professional journey.
