After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Science in clinical/medical laboratory science in 1993 from Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca in Bogotá, Colombia, Dr. Hernandez provided superior service as a junior researcher from 1994 to 1995 with CORPOICA CEISA, as an undergraduate teacher in clinical biochemistry from 1995 to 1996 with University Manuela Beltran, as a medical technologist III, Bayer S.A. from 1996 to 1997 and as a clinical/medical laboratory scientist with Clinic Carlos Lleras, Unisaf-Pereira, Merck Sharp and Dohme and the Mackenzie Laboratory from 1997 to 2012, all in Bogotá.

After immigrating to the United States, Dr. Hernandez earned a Master of Public Health in 2016 and a Doctor of Public Health and Epidemiology in 2020 from Jackson State University in Mississippi. Since 2018, she has excelled as an epidemiologist with the Mississippi State Department of Health, where she investigates patterns and causes of disease and injury, seeking to reduce the risk and occurrence of negative health outcomes.

To remain aware of changes and advancements in her field, Dr. Hernandez maintains affiliations with the American Public Health Association, Mississippi Public Health Association (APHA), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Society for Microbiology (ASM), American Medical Technologists (AMT), College of Bacteriologists of Cundinamarca, National College of Bacteriologists of Colombia, and Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

Dr. Hernandez-Morales was inspired to enter the medical profession by her grandfather, a physician in Colombia. Her career highlight was receiving an award for the best student presentation at the American Public Health Association. Her goals in the next few years are to become a university professor and to continue her research in chronic and infectious diseases and COVID-19.
