Dimitrios P. Papavassiliou, MD, Pediatric Cardiologist at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cardiology.
From watching his parents excel as doctors, Dr. Papavassiliou was inspired to spearhead a career in the profession in his own right. His medical career began in his native Greece, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1984. Subsequently, he undertook residencies at the Infectious Diseases Hospital of Thessalonika and University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, as well as a fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia and Emory University Hospital. Dr. Papavassiliou went on to serve as a faculty member at Columbia University Hospital for eight years and worked in private practice for six years.
Today, Dr. Papavassiliou excels as a pediatric cardiologist at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, a role he commenced in 2015. Notably, the hospital ranks among the top 20 neonatology, pediatric cancer, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery programs in the country. Among his many duties, he conducts transthoracic, transesophageal and occasionally fetal echocardiograms and performs outpatient evaluation of pediatric heart disease for patients between the ages of zero and 22. In addition, Dr. Papavassiliou has taught as an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine since 2015.
Listed among Best Doctors in New York State, Dr. Papavassiliou attributes his vast success to hard work and honesty. He adds that being a healer, as opposed to being a physician only, has also endeared him to his patients. Additionally, he counts his marriage to his wife, who also holds a doctorate degree, as his most notable achievement. Looking ahead, Dr. Papavassiliou hopes to continue practicing in his field, while also working to help patients who lack the means to pay for medical assistance.
