Barry Jon Materson, MD, MBA, Physician and Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami Division Hospital of Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership.
Backed by a Bachelor of Science from the University of Miami, Dr. Materson went on to attain an MD and a Master of Business Administration in health care, both from his alma mater. He had aspired to become a doctor since the age of 10, initially finding the inspiration to pursue medicine after meeting a family member who was a pharmacist. In 1969, after completing his required residencies and fellowships, Dr. Materson took on the role of a research and education associate at the VA Medical Center in Miami, Florida. He remained there until 1995, going on to hold titles such as acting chief and associate chief of staff education. He proceeded to relocate to the University of Miami Medical Group as the medical director for managed care. In 2005, Dr. Materson became the physician liaison for the Office of Patient Protection and Risk Prevention. However, he has since transferred to the University of Miami Division Hospital of Medicine. Since 2008, he has been demonstrating consistent success as the chief academy mentor.
Looking back on his illustrious career, Dr. Materson considers one of his greatest accomplishments to be his research in antihypertensive agents regarding beta-adrenergic blocking agents as possible first-line therapy practices. He has additionally completed research on low-dose captopril and low-dose diuretics, as well as on hypertension in the elderly. In light of his many achievements, Dr. Materson earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Consortium of Southeastern Hypertension Control. Further, in 2018, he was inducted into the Miami Beach Senior High School Hall of Fame. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Materson enjoys reading, completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with his family.
