With over 45 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Shinn has excelled as the owner, clinical director and senior endodontist at EndodonticsLA since 2015. He previously served as an endodontic associate for Airport Center Family Dental from 2010 to 2018, Dr. Shaw and Dr. Skinner in Los Angeles, California from 2010 to 2017, Dr. Roland Markarian, DDS in Lancaster, California from 2009 to 2016 and Dr. Paul Campbell DDS Inc. from 1992 to 2016. During this time, he was also active in the same position with Dr. Mehta and Dr. Pandya in Los Angeles from 2001 to 2005.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Shinn pursued an education at the University of Southern California where he completed his pre-dental requirements. He continued his academic efforts at the University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry, where he became one of the first African American students to graduate with a DDS in 1974. He concluded his studies at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, completing the Advanced Endodontics Specialty Program in 1977.
Esteemed as a fair, kind, compassionate and empathetic person, Dr. Shinn attributes his success to the influence of his role models; notably, Dr. Robert Krasny, professor emeritus & former chairman of the Endodontic Department at UCLA Dental School and Dr. Arne Bjorndal, professor emeritus & former chairman of the Endodontic Department at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and his beloved parents. Beginning his speciality career in 1974, he found further success in Los Angeles as an endodontist and owner in private practice between 1977 and 1994. In addition to attributing his success to the influence of his role models his ability to utilize his values on an ethical professional and spiritual basis. Initially drawn to become a jazz musician, he decided to follow his specific career path as not many of his peers wanted to do root canals and he was noted among his class for his precision.
Among his many professional highlights, Dr. Shinn is proud to have provided treatment for patients with difficult cases, including re-implanting teeth that had been knocked out previously. He also volunteers at The Children’s Dental Center in Inglewood, California, a non-profit that serves the needs of impoverished patients. Dr. Shinn also serves as a diversion evaluation committee member for the California Dental Board serving impaired health professionals.
Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Shinn remains associated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has been notably affiliated with the American Association of Endodontists, The California State Association of Endodontists, the American Dental Association, the National Dental Association, the California Dental Association, the Los Angeles Dental Society, the Western Dental Society, and the Angeles City Society. In light of his exceptional undertakings, he was presented with the Silver Angel Award from the Angel Dental Society in 2015. Looking toward the future, Dr. Shinn hopes to take a qualified associate and weighs the possibility of selling his practice while dedicating his time and attention to his present responsibilities.
