Dr. Torres is a nationally recognized neurotrauma and neurocritical expert often called to moderate neurosurgical scientific sessions, working closely with industry in advancing new technology for treating traumatic brain injury. He has extensive experience in open cerebrovascular neurosurgery, neuro-endoscopy and is also fellowship trained in neuro-oncology as well as complex spine.

After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in biological and biomedical sciences from the University of Chicago in 1978, Dr. Torres continued his education with a Medical Doctor from Universidad Central del Este in San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic and subsequently completed an internship in neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986 and a residency in neuropathology in 1990 and general surgery in 1991 at Columbia University in 1990. He followed with a fellowship in neurosurgical oncology with the University of California, San Francisco from 1991 to 1993, a fellowship in neurosurgery spine with the University of California, Los Angeles from 1993 to 1994 and a residency in neurosurgery with the University of California Medical Center from 1994 to 1999.

Dr. Torres provided superior care as chief of chief of neurosurgery with the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center from 2006 to 2011; chairman of the department of neurosurgery with the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska from 2012 to 2014; and attending neurosurgeon with Orlando Neurosurgery in Florida from 2020 to the present. In addition, he has imparted his knowledge as an associate professor of neurosurgery with the Stanford University Medical Center from 2006 to 2012, associate professor of neurological surgery with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and associate professor of neurosurgery with the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville from 2018 to 2020.

Dr. Torres has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters that  include “Hyperosmolar Therapy” in Congress Quarterly; “Thoracolumbar Vertebral Body Replacement:  Materials & Techniques” in Contemporary Neurosurgery; and “Non–Neoplastic Pineal Cysts” in the Journal of Neurology. In 2012, he captured the Arthur L. Bloomfield Award for Teaching Excellence in Clinical Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. His professional memberships have included the Neuro-Critical Care Society, Alaska Brain Injury Network, American Association of Neuropathologists, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, American Brain Injury Consortium, California Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, New York State Medical Society, North American Spine Society and the American Medical Association.

Growing up Dr. Torres was very close to his grandmother and when he was about five years of age she passed away after having surgery on a brain tumor. Because of that incident, he wanted to learn more about the surgery and about the brain, which he found fascinating. Attributing his success to hard work and perseverance, he considers his career highlight receiving the Albert Bloomfield Award at Stanford. In the coming years, Dr. Torres is contemplating entering politics and running for Congress.
