Malini Narayanan, Chairman, Department of Surgery at University of Maryland Capital Region Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in neurosurgery practice and administration.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, summa cum laude, and a Master of Science in the same discipline from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she worked on a retinal prosthesis for patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Dr. Narayanan turned her attention to the medical field and obtained a Medical Doctor from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1998. She then served a surgical internship from 1998 to 1999 and a neurosurgery residency from 1999 to 2005 with Boston Children’s Hospital/Brigham & Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School before completing a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery from 2005 to 2006 and a chief residency from 2006 to 2007 with Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Dr. Narayanan provided superior care as a neurosurgeon with American Spine Surgicenter from 2012 to 2015, Holy Cross Hospital from 2013 to 2015, Seneca Meadows Surgicenter LLC from 2014 to 2015, Frederick Memorial Hospital from 2013 to 2016, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital from 2013 to 2018 and Washington Adventist Hospital, now known as White Oak Medical Center, from 2013 to 2020. She prospered as the owner of National Neurosurgery Solutions in Rockville from 2015 to 2019 and as chairman-elect of general surgery with Metropolitan Neurosurgery Group (MNG) from 2019 to 2020.

Following her success as chief of neurosurgery with the University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital from 2019 to 2021, Dr. Narayanan has flourished as chairman since 2020 of the department of surgery with the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center (UM Capital Region Health) in Cheverly, Maryland. Her numerous career accolades include inclusions in the Top Five Percent in America’s Most Honored Professionals and America’s Most Honored Doctors, and she has been named America’s Top Surgeon in Neurosurgery by the Consumer’s Research Council of America, Top Doctor by Neurosurgery Magazine. Dr. Narayanan’s professional memberships have included the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, the Maryland State Medical Society and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Originally, Dr. Narayanan studied engineering, owing to her fascination for math and building things. During the process, she discovered her passion for helping people. As the sister of a person who deals with high-functioning autism, she was always exposed to neurologic deficits and she became more connected to her compassion for people suffering from it. The experience led to an interest in bioengineering and, eventually, in cochlear implants and visual implants. In the course of continuing her visual research, she met neurosurgeon Dr. David Frim at the Massachusetts General Hospital and she fell in love with neurosurgery.

Saving pediatric lives has been Dr. Narayanan’s greatest achievement as a professional. She remembers a baby thought by others to be suffering from anencephaly, but she was able to identify that the real problem was hydrocephalus. The two conditions have similar symptoms, except for very minor differences that she was able to detect. In the coming years, Dr. Narayanan intends to be more involved in mentoring, sponsoring and engaging in global neurosurgery missions while continuing her research work on EDS (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). Inspired by her brother, she also wants to develop programs for autism.
