Following obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1976, magna cum laude, from Harvard University, Dr. Sevarino continued his education with a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery in 1982 from McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and followed with a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biology in 1983 from the University of Connecticut Health Center in Storrs. He then completed an internship in medicine with St. Vincent Hospital from 1983 to 1984, a research fellowship in medicine with Tufts-New England Medical Center from 1984 to 1988 and a residency in psychiatry and part-time postdoctoral fellowship with the Yale School of Medicine from 1988 to 1991.
Dr. Sevarino provided superior care as an inpatient psychiatrist with the University of Connecticut Health Center from 2000 to 2004, medical director with the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs from 2004 to 2016 and consulting physician with Liberty Life Assurance Company from 2007 to 2016. From 2016 to the present, he has excelled as consulting psychiatrist for Gaylord Specialty Healthcare in Wallingford, Connecticut, where he has made an impact as a consult for physiatrists and hospitalists caring for inpatients with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other medical conditions requiring rehabilitation beyond the acute care hospitalization. His special interests include recognition and treatment of substance use disorders and non-opioid chronic pain management.
Dr. Sevarino has received numerous honors that include Top Psychiatrist from Top Doctors Magazine in 2021, President’s Award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry in 2021 and the Green Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching Award from University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 2003, as well as the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) FIRST Award, Scottish Rite Schizophrenia Research Program Award, Pfizer Scholars Award, Yale Department of Psychiatry Basic Science Training Grant Award and many more. His professional memberships have included the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, of which his term as president he considers a career highlight; the Osler Society, McGill Chapter; American Society of Addiction Medicine; American Psychiatric Association; American Medical Association; International Society of Addiction Medicine; American Society of Addiction Medicine; and the American Psychiatric Association. The author or co-author of numerous learned publications and studies, Dr. Sevarino sees himself publishing additional studies in the coming years.
