After pre-med coursework with San Diego State University from 2005 to 2006, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine in 2011 from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

Dr. Mackey served his country as an officer and a parachutist with the U.S.Army from 1989 to 1999. He later rejoined the armed forces in 2011 with the U.S. Navy, where he prospered as a resident physician from 2011 to 2014 and full-time physician from 2014 to 2021 with the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He thereupon served as a department head in family medicine at the United States Naval Hospital in Yokohama, Japan from 2014 to 2017, as ship’s physician aboard the USS Ronald Reagan from 2017 to 2019, as senior medical officer with 29 Palms from 2019 to 2020.

In the private sector, Dr. Mackey served as a senior business analyst with PeopleFirst from 2002 to 2005, as a senior operations and business analyst with Capitol One Auto Finance from 1999 to 2005, and as an emergency medical technician with Care Ambulance in 2007. Since 2021, Dr. Mackey has flourished as center medical director with Concentra, a premier national health care company operates more than 520 urgent care centers in 44 states with its primary focus on occupational health, physical therapy, and urgent care.

Dr. Mackey’s numerous honors include a Joint Commendation Medal in 1993, three Navy Commendation Medals in 2017, 2019 and 2020, a Navy Achievement Medal in 2020, four Army Commendation Medals during the 1990s and two Army Achievement Medals in 1991 and 1992.

Dr. Mackey attributes his success to his hard work and persistence. He was first exposed to military service when he joined the ROTC program while he was studying at Duke University. He loved the experience so much that he decided to serve another 10 years. When he worked in the corporate world for a while, he realized something was missing, and then joined the Navy and two years later applied to medical school.

As a career highlight, Dr. Mackey mentions delivering babies in Japan while he was serving in the Navy as one of the most rewarding experiences of his medical career. His proudest experience was when he served as an engineer in the US Army, where he led a company of 200 soldiers, providing clean water by digging wells in third world countries. In the coming years, Dr. Mackey is thinking of earning his degree in occupational medicine and would like to do more humanitarian missions such as with Doctors Without Borders.
