This vision includes integrating multidisciplinary providers, particularly in mental health, to address the significant shortage of mental health resources in Oregon and surrounding regions. Dr. Diarra’s goal is to build a team that enhances access to comprehensive care for diverse patient populations.
From 2015 to 2024, Dr. Diarra served as a primary care physician at Legacy Health in Portland, Oregon. During this nearly decade-long tenure, he provided internal medicine services to a wide range of patients while establishing strong therapeutic relationships that became the cornerstone of his professional fulfillment. These connections proved so meaningful that after completing his regular practice role in 2024 and nearly stepping away from medicine, Dr. Diarra recommitted himself to the field upon realizing the profound impact these bonds had on both himself and those he served.
Dr. Diarra’s academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in biomedical and medical engineering from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, graduating in 2006. He then earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from AZCOM at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, in 2012. Dr. Diarra relocated to Oregon for residency training at Legacy Health, where, in his final year of residency, he was honored with the Resident of the Year Award for outstanding commitment to primary care. He holds board certification in metabolic health and obesity medicine and is a diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
Following a path to medicine influenced by early encouragement to explore his academic strengths, particularly mathematics and science, while growing up in Mali, Western Africa, Dr. Diarra initially enrolled in medical school there under challenging circumstances marked by civil unrest and limited instruction time due to teacher strikes. Ultimately, he sought opportunities abroad when it became clear that local conditions would impede his ability to serve effectively as a physician. A pivotal moment came when Dr. Diarra’s mother secured an international position with the United Nations that enabled him to relocate to the United States for further study.
Dr. Diarra’s professional memberships include fellow status with the American College of Physicians since 2023. He also maintains active involvement with the American Academy of Private Physicians and Business Network International. Beyond his work-related affiliations, Dr. Diarra has contributed significantly through civic engagement and professional service roles. He has served as the co-chair for diversity, equity and inclusion efforts on the memberships committee of the American College of Physicians’ Oregon chapter. He has also volunteered as a local soccer coach, demonstrating a commitment to mentorship outside traditional healthcare settings.
In addition to receiving a Resident of the Year Award, Dr. Diarra won a hand hygiene competition during his residency, reflecting attention to both excellence in patient care and adherence to best practices within clinical environments.
