Born in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Ozuna Corporan would find inspiration for his career journey while spending time with his grandmother. He served as her caregiver late in her life, accompanying her to medical appointments and helping her day-to-day. Motivated by that experience, Dr. Ozuna Corporan became the first doctor in his family, choosing to specialize in geriatric medical care. Since 2024, he has operated as a medical doctor with The State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Ozuna Corporan has contributed as a professor of geriatrics at SUNY since 2021. He finds fulfilment in educating others, including offering educational talks to his broader community. Dr. Ozuna Corporan has given presentations on memory care and mental health, among other topics. He emphasizes the importance of providing geriatric care not just in a clinical setting, but in community spaces such as stores and parks.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Ozuna Corporan established his fundamental skills through his education. He earned an MD in 2012, graduating magna cum laude from the Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Ozuna Corporan went on to complete a four-year residency program in geriatric medicine at the same institution in 2016. After immigrating to the United States, he finished a second residency program, this one focused on geriatric medicine, at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2021. His grandmother was alive when he graduated from medical school and, alongside his parents, expressed deep pride.
When considering the trajectory of his professional life, Dr. Ozuna Corporan believes that hard work and perseverance in the face of challenges have been central to his success. He notes the example given by his father, who began attending law school before civil war broke out in his country, interrupting his studies. Although he was not able to finish his law studies, he helped keep his family safe and remained a strong voice of encouragement for Dr. Ozuna Corporan throughout his time in medical school. Beyond the perseverance instilled in him by his father, he also considers empathy and compassion for his patients as a primary factor that sets him apart from other doctors.
As part of his commitment to his career, Dr. Ozuna Corporan maintains membership in the American Geriatrics Society. This nationwide nonprofit includes doctors, nurses, social workers and patients, supporting the interprofessional collaboration in the service of keeping older Americans happy and healthy. Dr. Ozuna Corporan’s care for others is also reflected in his civic engagement. He volunteers with his local church, offering his time to help make his local community a better place.
In Dr. Ozuna Corporan’s free time, he finds joy in hiking, swimming and playing tennis and basketball. As he continues in his professional life, he looks forward to extending his mastery in geriatric medicine further. Dr. Ozuna Corporan particularly plans to focus on learning more about care for dementia patients in the near future, while also exploring chronic disease prevention. Additionally, he hopes to open his own practice, which he envisions as concentrating on cognitive, mental and metabolic issues.
