Peter Aran, MD, Retired Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in healthcare and higher education.

With decades of experience in both the classroom and his clinical practice, Dr. Peter Aran’s distinguished career in medicine and leadership has been marked by a series of significant roles and contributions to the health care industry. Recently retired from his prestigious posts at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, he had excelled as both the associate dean for clinical affairs and chief medical officer between 2018 and 2021. In these capacities, Dr. Aran was instrumental in shaping clinical practices and policies at the aforementioned university, leveraging his extensive experience to enhance the quality of medical education and patient care.

Prior to his tenure at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Aran worked diligently as the medical director of population health management at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma from 2016 to 2018. His efforts during this period focused on aligning business models with popular health initiatives, advocating for a broader definition of health care teams that includes not only doctors and nurses but also emergency rooms and hospitals.

Dr. Aran previously found much success at Saint Francis Health System, beginning in 2009 when he was appointed as the associate chief medical officer and senior vice president. He quickly advanced to become the chief medical officer and senior vice president between 2010 and 2012, where he played a pivotal role in executive hiring processes and strategic planning. His commitment to quality improvement led him to serve as the senior vice president for quality from 2013 to 2015, followed by his brief post as the vice president for system quality in 2015.

Before transitioning into administrative roles, Dr. Aran had built an extensive career in clinical practice. He forged his stellar reputation in his field as a gastroenterologist and internist at Gastroenterology Specialists, Inc., from 1991 to 2009, after operating for a year with Adult Gastroenterology Specialists. His academic career also laid the foundation for his later success, having enabled him to impart his knowledge to fellow medical professionals as an assistant professor and instructor in internal medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals from 1987 to 1990.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Aran pursued an education at the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine before completing his residency at the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine in 1984. He subsequently refined his skills with fellowships in gastroenterology and hepatology at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1987. Never one to rest on his laurels, Dr. Aran would later earn a certificate in healthcare management from Oklahoma City University in 2018.

Throughout his career, Dr. Aran has been actively involved in various professional organizations, including serving as chairman of the board of directors for the Oklahoma State Medical Association from 2020 to 2021. His long-standing commitment to Saint Francis Health System is evidenced by his notable 13-year tenure on its board of directors.

In addition to his primary accomplishments, Dr. Aran values family wellness as an integral part of overall well-being. He credits much of his success to the support network provided by his loving wife, Sofia, who also carved out her own path as a neuroscientist, and their four wonderful children: Robert, Gregory, Daniel, and Emily. Outside of work, Dr. Aran enjoys dedicating her time to her family, traveling, competing in marathons, learning foreign languages, and providing care for family members living with health issues.
