He was previously active as an associate professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine from 2010 to 2017. Dr. Dovat’s dedication to mentoring emerging scientists is evident through his involvement in the Clinician-Scientist Faculty Mentoring (FaMe) Program, which he established to equip clinical scientists with the skills necessary for independent research. 

In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Dovat serves as the director of translational research and development of therapeutics for the Four Diamonds Pediatric Cancer Research Center at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. His civic engagement extends to volunteering as a teacher at community colleges and contributing to study sections for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Dovat has been likewise affiliated with several prestigious organizations such as the American Society of Hematology, Society for Pediatric Research, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and the American Pediatric Society.

Dr. Dovat’s impressive educational background includes earning a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry as well as a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Novi Sad in Serbia in 1988. Influenced by mentors such as Stephen Smaled and Stephen Feig from the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as Dr. Cheston M. Berlin from Penn State during his residency, he has dedicated himself to pediatric hematology and oncology with a focus on effecting positive change through clinical practice and research. Furthermore, Dr. Dovat has exhibited his adept strategic mind with his skills in chess, having obtained the title of FIDE Master from the International Chess Federation.

Dr. Dovat has been presented with a number of accolades over the years, including the Faculty Excellence in Career Mentoring Award from Penn State College of Medicine in 2018 and the Distinguished Educator Award from the Woodward Center for Excellence in Health Sciences Education in 2023. Moreover, his stellar contributions to the field have been recognized by the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology with the Young Investigator Award in 2001. The recipient of grants from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Dovat was also notably selected for inclusion among the Best Doctors in America between 2008 and 2011.

Dr. Dovat has attributed his success to his inimitable drive and his determination, which have enabled him to seize a number of important opportunities throughout his career. Dedicated to effecting positive change through clinical practice and research in pediatric hematology and oncology, he is further motivated by the need to address the impact of devastating diseases on children and their families. He believes his most notable achievement is discovering the molecular reason for cell disparity in pediatric leukemia in Hispanic Latino children, which he published a couple of years ago. The devoted father of two wonderful daughters, Dr. Dovat hopes to continue discovering new treatments for cancer while developing groundbreaking drugs that will prevent cancer and helping people improve post-chemotherapy brain and organ function in the coming years.
