Bruno Ela Ondo, Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health at the Centre Intégré de Santé et des Services Sociaux de l’Outaouais, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in family medicine and public health.
With more than a decade of experience to his credit, Dr. Ela Ondo has established a successful career in family medicine and public health. He currently excels as a primary care physician at the CISSS of Outaouais, a position he has held since 2023. His experience also includes associate physician at Hôpital Emile Roux from 2022 to 2023, medical doctor at St. Joseph Hospital from 2019 to 2023, and assistant professor at Université des Montagnes in Cameroon from 2015 to 2019. He also dedicates his time to volunteer work at a local hospital in Cameroon and as a volunteer for President Obama’s campaign. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from Faculté de Médecine de Marseille, Université de la Méditerranée, France, in 1999, and a Masters of Public Health in epidemiology from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, in 2014.
Reflecting on his path, originally from Cameroon, Dr. Ela Ondo relocated to Canada, drawn by a strong interest in Quebec. After earning his medical degree in France, he initially aimed to pursue a specialty in Quebec, however, the opportunity did not arise. He went on to earn a master’s degree in public health from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, subsequently returning to Cameroon to teach public health for four years as assistant professor. During his time in the United States, he successfully completed the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) step 1 and 2, obtained his ECFMG certification in 2009, and passed the USMLE Step 3 in June 2010.
Despite these accomplishments, Dr. Ela Ondo was unable to secure a residency in the U.S., which led him to return to Cameroon and later relocate to France in 2019 to study pediatrics ear-nose and throat (ENT) for two years, while practicing medicine before arriving in Quebec in November 2023. He takes great pride in earning his medical degree, especially given the challenges of moving from Africa to attend medical school in France. Although he ultimately obtained U.S. citizenship, he made a tough decision to leave and return to Cameroon, driven by his commitment to apply his medical expertise where it could have a meaningful impact.
Dr. Ela Ondo attributes his success to his commitment, courage, passion and devotion for his work. In the coming years, he is fully dedicated to acquiring a full medical license to practice in Quebec across both public and private sectors. His previous research efforts in Cameroon led to publications in respected medical journals, where he served as principal investigator and author for the research project. Ultimately, he aspires to assume the esteemed position of professor of medicine to impart knowledge, deliver lectures, and further research at the university level.
When advising aspiring professionals, Dr. Ela Ondo emphasizes that while medicine is a noble field, it has its challenges. Physicians may provide excellent care, but a single error can overshadow all of their accomplishments. Therefore, it is crucial to remain vigilant and focused at all times, paying close attention to even the smallest details. He also stresses the importance of dedication, continuous learning, and adaptation, noting that staying updated with the latest advancements is essential for maintaining excellence in practice.
