His responsibilities range from treating patients in the office for general complaints such as hernias and breast cancer to providing emergency care for critical conditions like bowel obstructions, gunshot wounds, and stab wounds. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a scientific and educational organization dedicated to improving the care of surgical patients, and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery to treat obesity and related conditions, as well as the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, a professional organization dedicated to advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly in gastrointestinal and endoscopic surgery.
Dr. Comissiong also dedicates his time to volunteering at free clinics and mentoring high school and college students interested in medicine. Laying a solid foundation for his career, Dr. Comissiong earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1997 and then completed his residency at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in 2002. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Reflecting on his journey, he attributes his drive to improve and fix things to his early exposure to medicine, inspired by his mother, a nurse. He takes immense pride in returning to his home in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, where he can make a difference in his community by saving lives and reuniting families with their loved ones.
Dr. Comissiong attributes his success to the unwavering support and guidance of his mother and grandmother, who were instrumental in shaping his path and always encouraged him. Looking ahead, he envisions a more relaxed future, aiming to slow down and focus on helping more people without the intense pressure of his current workload. Although his schedule is currently very demanding, he looks forward to gradually lightening his responsibilities while still making a meaningful impact. In the next five years, he anticipates continuing much of the work he does now, while also pursuing his passion for modifying and racing cars. Ultimately, he hopes to leave a lasting legacy as he transitions into a less demanding role.
