Dr. Abramczyk’s career in healthcare spans more than two decades and is marked by a steadfast commitment to integrative medicine and patient-centered care. As the section chief of whole health at the Charleston VA Healthcare System since 2024, he has led a multidisciplinary team focused on holistic health solutions for veterans. In this capacity, Dr. Abramczyk oversees a growing staff that currently includes a dozen direct reports, which is expected to increase and potentially surpass 20 within the next year, and manages between 40 and 60 indirect reports across specialties, such as nutrition, exercise therapy, biofeedback, and complementary modalities like massage and hypnotherapy. His responsibilities include treating patients, overseeing administrative functions, managing a multimillion-dollar budget and ensuring regulatory compliance. Dr. Abramczyk dedicates approximately 80% of his efforts to clinical work and the remaining to administration.
Affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for over 15 years, Dr. Abramczyk previously served as a pain management and opioid safety coordinator from 2022 to 2025. In this position, he was responsible for program oversight, budget management and acting as a liaison between the National Pain Management Office and local VA facilities. Dr. Abramczyk’s leadership extended to human resources functions and to fulfilling national office obligations related to pain management initiatives.
Between 2023 and 2024, Dr. Abramczyk also held the position of interim whole health clinical director at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. During this time, he developed a strategic business plan for the whole health program that was approved by facility leadership and led recruitment efforts for new positions within the department.
Dr. Abramczyk distinguished himself as a clinical pharmacy specialist in ambulatory care, pain management and bariatric surgery during the early part of his career with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, beginning in 2010 and spanning over a decade. He concurrently served as a clinical pharmacy practitioner in pain management during this period. Dr. Abramczyk’s expertise led him to chair the pain oversight committee and spearhead national initiatives, such as the STORM (High-Risk Opioid Review and Suicide Safety Teams) project for overdose prevention and safety reviews. He played an instrumental role in leading regional work groups within the government sector.
Throughout his career with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs since joining in 2009 as an inpatient pharmacist at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida, Dr. Abramczyk has demonstrated exceptional leadership across clinical and administrative roles. His work emphasizes reducing pain, improving sleep quality, enhancing mental well-being and advancing whole health practices, areas where he is regarded as an expert.
In addition to his primary roles within federal healthcare settings, Dr. Abramczyk serves as an affiliate assistant professor of clinical pharmacy and outcome science at the Medical University of South Carolina. In this capacity, he mentors students without formal lecturing duties.
Dr. Abramczyk’s academic background laid a strong foundation for his accomplishments. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in pharmaceutical sciences from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, in 2003, completed a postgraduate year one residency training in general practice at UToledo Health, followed by postgraduate year two residency training in ambulatory care pain management at James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, and earned a Doctor of Pharmacy from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.
In addition to his formal education, Dr. Abramczyk holds numerous certifications that underscore his commitment to excellence. Among them, he received registration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, secured certified pharmacy executive leader credentials, pharmacist licensure through the state of Ohio, aromatherapy certification from the University of Minnesota and immunization certification from the American Pharmacists Association. He also received basic cardiac life support and advanced cardiac life support certifications from the American Heart Association, Inc., certified change management practitioner status from Prosci Inc., and certified pharmacotherapy specialist designation from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. Furthermore, Dr. Abramczyk received Lean Six Sigma yellow belt, green belt and black belt certifications and completed VHA Institute for Leadership Training via LEADx, Inc., and healthcare leadership training through various U.S. government programs.
Dr. Abramczyk’s professional journey is further distinguished by active involvement with several industry organizations, including participation in Veterans Equitable Resource Allocations, membership in the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the Ohio Pharmacists Association. Outside his professional commitments, he has dedicated time to civic engagement through years with Youth Ministry Young Life programs and service as an assistant high school hockey coach at Worthington Kilbourne High School in Columbus.
As an expert in his field, Dr. Abramczyk has made scholarly contributions that include several notable projects. He contributed to “Evaluation of Pharmacist Intervention in High-Risk Opioid Patients Identified via STORM” from 2016 to 2017, “Implementation of a Pharmacist-Led Suicide and Overdose Risk Mitigation Clinic” between 2022 and 2023, and the RHJ VAMC Key Stakeholders Annual Report, among others. He also served as a subject matter expert reviewer for pain management sections in “The Pharmacist’s Letter and Prescriber’s Letter,” published by Therapeutic Research Center.
Dr. Abramczyk’s expertise has been highlighted through public engagements, such as serving as a specialist pain panel member for national television broadcasts in 2019 and participating in Pain Community of Practice Calls from 2022 to 2023. He has also been interviewed for articles on pain oversight progress, featured on local news segments and appeared on My VA Campaign Pain Management billboards.
Aside from these honors, Dr. Abramczyk’s contributions have become widely recognized via accolades. He was awarded the Yellow Belt for VISN 7 High Reliability Organization Project of the Year by the Veterans Health Administration from 2023 to 2024 and earned Green Belt honors at the VHA National Improvement Conference in 2026. Notably, Dr. Abramczyk’s Lean Six Sigma yellow belt project, which focused on reducing community care costs for Compton Integrative Health modalities, was implemented systemwide across the VA and won High Reliability Organization Project of the Year honors, which he considers a defining professional achievement. Additional accolades included Service Awards for his 10- and 15-year milestones with the Veterans Health Administration in 2019 and 2024, respectively, a Preceptor of the Year from the VA Charleston Health Care’s Department of Pharmacy and a Leadership Ethics Scholarship Award from Lilly USA, LLC.
Persistence has been central to Dr. Abramczyk’s success. Looking ahead, he aims to broaden his impact beyond individual patient care by promoting integrative health approaches nationally and internationally. He intends to seek opportunities that may include advisory board service or executive leadership roles outside government healthcare sectors while remaining open to entrepreneurial ventures aligned with his passion for sports or real estate investment. Dr. Abramczyk’s career exemplifies perseverance, adaptability and continuous growth, qualities that have enabled him to achieve distinction as an expert in reducing pain, improving sleep quality, enhancing mental well-being and advancing whole health practices within one of America’s largest healthcare systems.
