Ioana R. Preston, MD, Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Hypertension Care.

Dr. Preston has established herself as a leading authority in pulmonary hypertension, clinical research and drug development over a distinguished career spanning over 30 years. Since 2025, she has served as the director of the pulmonary hypertension center at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, where she is responsible for patient care, directing a multidisciplinary team, and overseeing both inpatient and outpatient services. In this capacity, Dr. Preston organizes the center’s operations, establishes standardized treatment protocols and leads clinical research projects to deepen understanding of pulmonary hypertension’s impact on patients. She is also dedicated to education, teaching residents, medical students from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and fellows who rotate through her program.

Before her current role at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Preston was the director of the pulmonary hypertension center at Tufts Medical Center from 2015 to 2024. During this period, she advanced the center’s reputation for excellence in patient care and research, implementing innovative protocols and expanding educational opportunities for trainees. Dr. Preston’s leadership contributed significantly to the growth of the program and its recognition as a regional leader in pulmonary vascular disease management.

From 2003 to 2015, Dr. Preston excelled as the co-director at Tufts Medical Center. Her efforts during these years laid the groundwork for many of the advancements that followed in her subsequent directorship.

Dr. Preston’s academic journey began at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, where she earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1995. Subsequently, she completed a residency in internal medicine at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown Medical School in 1999, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care in 2002. Dr. Preston then pursued a research fellowship in pulmonary vascular disease at Tufts Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine, which she completed in 2003. This rigorous training provided a strong foundation for her clinical acumen and research initiatives, enabling her to make significant contributions to patient care and medical education.

Dr. Preston’s expertise is further reflected in her active involvement with prominent professional organizations. She serves on the planning committee for the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and holds memberships with the American College of Cardiology Foundation, the American College of Chest Physicians, the Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society and the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute. Additionally, Dr. Preston has contributed as past chair of the educational committee for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, demonstrating her commitment to advancing education and best practices within her specialty.

Throughout her career, Dr. Preston has shared her knowledge internationally as a speaker for PHA Europe, furthering awareness and understanding of pulmonary hypertension on a global scale. Looking ahead, she is committed to expanding the pulmonary hypertension center at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center to deliver standardized, state-of-the-art care that enhances both quality of life and longevity for patients. Dr. Preston remains focused on advancing research into improved therapies while adopting a holistic approach that integrates medical care with psychological support and physical therapy for patients and their families. She is also dedicated to increasing access to affordable treatments and developing comprehensive programs that address all aspects of care for individuals living with pulmonary hypertension.
