At The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre, Dr. Piefer holds multiple concurrent roles. Since 2013, he has been a partner, orthopedic surgeon, board of directors member and speaker. He has also served as a member of the medical executive committee, where he participates in high-level decision-making processes that shape patient care standards and hospital operations, and serves on the governing board for both the practice and its surgical center, in which he holds partial ownership.

Dr. Piefer’s responsibilities include treating complex sports medicine cases, such as rotator cuff injuries, anterior cruciate ligament tears and meniscus injuries, as well as performing shoulder, hip and knee replacements. Additionally, he covers emergency orthopedic calls at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, a level II trauma center, five days each month.

From 2023 to 2024, Dr. Piefer served as the chief of staff at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center after holding the position of vice chief of staff in 2023. He also chaired the department of orthopedics twice, between 2015 and 2023. These leadership roles allowed Dr. Piefer to influence departmental policies and mentor emerging medical professionals.

In addition to his work at the medical center, Dr. Piefer established Piefer Bone & Joint as an orthopedic surgeon in 2024, where he continues to advance his clinical skills and contribute to the field in a private practice setting. Located in Conroe, Texas, his practice offers both operative and nonoperative orthopedic treatment for patients of all ages.

Dr. Piefer’s academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in biomedical science, summa cum laude, from Texas A&M University in College Station in 2001, earning distinction as an honors fellow. He continued his education at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he received a Doctor of Medicine in 2005 and was recognized as the Outstanding Student in Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Piefer subsequently completed an orthopedic surgery residency at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2010 and an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at Taos Orthopedic Institute in 2011. Throughout his career, Dr. Piefer has contributed to academic literature as the author of two articles on anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions published in Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic & Related Surgery in 2012. He currently hosts the podcast “Slice of Piefer,” where he shares insights on leadership and medicine.

Invested civically, Dr. Piefer has served as a medical team lead for medical missions organized by St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church since 2017. Earlier, he was active as a member of the board of trustees at Frassati Catholic High School and directed the ACTS Men’s Retreat at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

Dr. Piefer’s excellence has been recognized through several awards, including the Best PGY3 Orthopedic Teaching Resident Award in 2008 and the Physician of the Year at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center in 2016. However, his most notable professional achievement has been the establishment of a cohesive team dedicated to delivering the highest-quality patient care. Dr. Piefer believes that when a team is united around a shared mission, it creates an environment where both patients and staff can thrive. This approach not only ensures exceptional service for patients but also fosters a positive workplace culture.

The decision to pursue medicine was influenced by Dr. Piefer’s father, a retired family practice physician whose dedication inspired him despite not being a surgeon himself. Initially considering a career in business during his first year at Texas A&M University, Dr. Piefer ultimately chose medicine after reflecting on his experiences with sports-related injuries from playing football, baseball and soccer. His passion for orthopedics was solidified during medical school through positive interactions with colleagues and patients eager to improve their health.

Born in Houston, Texas, Dr. Piefer values humility and gratitude, qualities that guide both his professional endeavors and personal life. Looking ahead, he aims to expand his speaking engagements to share insights with leaders seeking to transform high-pressure environments into purposeful spaces where teams excel. Dr. Piefer also remains committed to advancing orthopedic surgery within his community while developing new initiatives, such as writing a book on leadership. He hopes to be remembered for bringing joy and happiness to others by serving patients selflessly, a legacy rooted in compassion and service that continues to define his career and personal philosophy.
