Dr. Cole’s distinguished career in medicine spans more than five decades, marked by her unwavering commitment to patient care, education and global health. Currently serving as a professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, she continues to shape the next generation of physicians through her teaching, mentorship and research. Since assuming this role, Dr. Cole has remained dedicated to advancing medical education and fostering a culture of empathy and excellence among her students and colleagues.

Before her current appointment, Dr. Cole was a member of the clinical staff at Georgetown University Medical Center from 1984 to 2010. During this tenure, she provided comprehensive outpatient care and became known for her ability to connect with patients on a personal level, earning their loyalty and trust. Dr. Cole’s approach emphasized treating the whole patient, drawing from her extensive experience in both clinical practice and health care administration. Throughout her tenure at Georgetown University Medical Center, she has become well recognized for her research.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Cole served as a general internist at Boston University’s outpatient clinic for five years. This role allowed her to further develop her clinical acumen while working with diverse patient populations. In addition to her formal roles, Dr. Cole has contributed as a speaker and lecturer, sharing insights from her vast experience with audiences across the medical community.

Dr. Cole’s educational background culminated in a Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore in 1972. Her foundational training included both an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (formerly Baltimore City Hospital), where she honed her skills in internal medicine. Dr. Cole later completed a fellowship in primary care at Georgetown University Medical Center from 1980 to 1982. During this period, she initiated a patient education file that became an invaluable resource for interns and residents in the outpatient clinic, reflecting her dedication to improving both patient outcomes and medical training.

A significant milestone in Dr. Cole’s career was the co-founding of the Georgetown Women in Medicine Organization in 1994. This organization has played a pivotal role in advancing opportunities for women physicians and academics at Georgetown University Medical Center and beyond. Dr. Cole is also an active member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Beyond her professional affiliations, her civic engagement includes supporting Doctors Without Borders and various global health initiatives worldwide.

Dr. Cole’s thought leadership is reflected in numerous publications, including co-authoring a book chapter and giving invited presentations. She also delivered an invited address titled “Her Journey as a Woman in Medicine” at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in 2024. Additionally, Dr. Cole has been featured extensively, including profiles such as “1972 Marilee Cole” for HopkinsMedicine Class Notes in 2016.

Dr. Cole’s contributions have been widely recognized through numerous awards and honors. She received the National Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award from Georgetown Women in Medicine in 2014 and was named one of the First 100 Women Professors at Georgetown University Medical Center in 2016. Earlier accolades included the Service to Humanity Award from Bucknell University in 2008, the Service Award from the Georgetown University Medical Caucus of the GU Faculty Senate in 2010, and, among others, the Vicennial Medal for contributions to Georgetown University Medical Center in 2012.

Dr. Cole’s passion for global health has been a defining aspect of her professional journey. She is committed to completing ongoing research protocols and securing funding while serving as a resource for the success of these projects. Additionally, Dr. Cole aims to help unify global health efforts between the medical school-based institute and hospital-based initiatives at Georgetown University Medical Center. Although no longer engaged directly in patient care since 2013, Dr. Cole remains dedicated to contributing through educational or research capacities should she return to clinical settings.
