Thomas Lewis Matthew, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. Matthew dedicates himself to the well-being of his patients and strives for excellence in care and compassion. He was inspired by his father, Dr. Thomas William Matthew, who was the first Black neurosurgeon trained in the United States and established a nonprofit organization in New York City that helped underprivileged people in Harlem develop job, employment and life skills. His father’s synthesis of professional success and genuine care for others inspired Dr. Matthew to enter the field of medicine and earn a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College, a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and board certification under the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Matthew worked as the director of the Johns Hopkins cardiothoracic surgery program at Suburban Hospital, co-director of cardiovascular and thoracic surgical services at the Boulder Community Hospital, chief of the medical staff and medical director of the progressive open-heart unit at Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, and chief resident of thoracic cardiovascular surgery at the University of Virginia.
Among his achievements, Dr. Matthew is proud to have contributed to the integration of cardiovascular surgery services at the University of Colorado Health as well as the cardiothoracic surgery program at Suburban Hospital. During his time as the director of the Johns Hopkins cardiothoracic surgery program at Suburban Hospital, the hospital evolved from a small staff to a fully staffed unit with a growth trajectory in Montgomery County that will position the program to be one of the most significant providers of cardiothoracic surgery health care in the region within the next decade. In addition to this accomplishment, Dr. Matthew offers a free clinic that meets once a week and is hoping to expand this service. He enjoys helping patients as well as mentoring high school, undergraduate and medical students, and impresses upon his mentees the importance of hard work, preparedness and a love for what one does. As a testament to his success, Dr. Matthew is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology, holds membership with the National Medical Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and has been lauded with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
