Barry M. Newman, MD, MBA, MS, pediatric surgeon at Providence, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pediatric surgery.

Celebrated for a career of over 40 years, Dr. Newman’s journey to becoming a pediatric surgeon was not what he initially planned. He was initially inspired to pursue this direction by being in a meeting with a doctor who was appointed to become a surgeon at a children’s hospital during their meeting. Dr. Newman spent some time exploring work as a psychiatrist and as a primary care family doctor but eventually chose to focus on surgery, an area in which he felt very confident and skilled. Early in his professional life, he focused on teaching, including roles as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Virginia and the University of Illinois Chicago, an instructor in advanced trauma and life support at the American College of Surgeons, and a clinical associate professor of surgery at The University of Chicago.

In 1991, Dr. Newman became the director of pediatric surgery at Advocate Children’s Hospital (formerly Lutheran General Children’s Hospital). He further established himself across nearly 20 years with Loyola University Medical Center. Dr. Newman initially joined this institution in 1988 as a pediatric surgeon. Concurrently with that position, he has contributed to Loyola University Medical Center as the co-director of the surgical laparoscopy laboratory, an associate and professor of surgery and pediatrics, and the director of pediatric surgical services.

Beginning a tenure that has stretched on for nearly 20 years, Dr. Newman joined Providence in 2007 as a pediatric surgeon. He held additional responsibilities in the organization from 2007 to 2017, serving as the medical director of pediatric surgery. During his time with Providence, Dr. Newman has focused on improving surgical outcomes by prioritizing the well-being and knowledge of doctors, including leading a physician wellness project and co-producing more than 70 pediatric educational conferences. Though he retired from full-time work with Providence in 2025, he has remained a part-time pediatric surgeon and has continued to aid the Providence medical system as a consulting informaticist.

Since 1989, Dr. Newman has also offered guidance as the consulting director of A.R. Consultants. Through this company, he has been able to give data-based feedback on organizational policies, with a focus on unbiased witness testimony. As an expert at the crossroads of medical and legal issues, Dr. Newman has evaluated cases and testified as an expert witness. He has also helped guide clients through starting a new health care business and strategically managing existing ones.

Dr. Newman’s performance in the field was born of his academic journey, beginning with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, biology and anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. He then obtained an MD from Stony Brook University (formerly the State University of New York, Stony Brook) in 1976. Dr. Newman completed a residency in surgery through New York Medical College in 1978, a senior residency in surgery through Stony Brook University in 1981, and a chief residency in pediatric surgery through the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo in 1983. Subsequently, he pursued a research fellowship in pediatric surgery and gastroenterology with the Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo in 1984.

Committed to lifelong learning, Dr. Newman returned to the academic world in 2013, graduating with honors with a Master of Business Administration in finance and health care from Marylhurst University. He earned a Master of Science in health care informatics from Oregon Health & Science University in 2020. Dr. Newman is a board-certified physician with training in pediatric surgery and clinical informatics. He finished certification in health care with The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University in 2015.

Outside of his esteemed medical career, Dr. Newman has been happily married since 1989 and is a loving father to two children. He enjoys underwater photography, scuba diving and collecting wine. While enjoying his partial retirement, Dr. Newman still has many ambitions for the future. He plans to start a vlog and also looks forward to taking on more part-time commissions.
