Dr. Hirji, a talented and respected associate surgeon in the division of cardiac surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, has established himself as an expert in valvular heart disease, aortic disease and cardiac surgery. Since 2025, he has been responsible for seeing patients, ensuring comprehensive care and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration with intensivists, surgical teams and residents. Dr. Hirji’s daily routine includes performing complex procedures, such as valve replacements and heart bypass surgeries, as well as maintaining close follow-up with his patients to ensure optimal outcomes.

Before his current appointment, Dr. Hirji served as the cardiothoracic surgery chief resident physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 2024 to 2025. In this leadership role, he guided junior residents and contributed to the advancement of surgical protocols within the department.

Affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 2017, Dr. Hirji also held the roles of cardiothoracic surgery resident physician between 2021 and 2024 and general surgery chief resident physician from 2022 to 2023. Earlier, he served as a general surgery resident physician, which spanned from 2015 to 2022, providing him with a robust foundation in surgical principles and patient management.

Between 2017 and 2020, Dr. Hirji was recognized as the Vicky and Joseph Safra research fellow in the division of cardiac surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research during this time contributed significantly to advancements in cardiac surgery techniques and outcomes analysis. Concurrently, from 2015 to 2020, Dr. Hirji served as a resident physician and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he gained valuable experience in pediatric cardiac care.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Hirji was a medical student research fellow at Duke Clinical Research Institute from 2013 to 2015. There, he published approximately 30 papers in academic journals, including pioneering research on acute heart attacks that became highly cited in JAMA. Dr. Hirji’s early work laid the groundwork for subsequent studies in cardiology and influenced clinical practice guidelines.

Dr. Hirji’s academic journey included earning a full scholarship to study bioengineering at MIT in Dar es Salaam. He then secured another full scholarship to pursue his studies in Boston, thanks to his academic achievements. Immersed in Boston’s vibrant medical community since 2007, Dr. Hirji developed an interest in the intersection of medicine, engineering and surgery while shadowing Harvard-affiliated physicians.

A graduate of Duke University, Dr. Hirji received a Doctor of Medicine in 2015. During this time, mentorships helped him secure a fellowship at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, where he produced influential research on coronary artery disease among patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Dr. Hirji then pursued a Master of Public Health in clinical effectiveness at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, graduating in 2019. In 2025, Dr. Hirji completed the Michael J. Davidson Structural Heart and Endovascular Surgical Fellowship at Mass General Brigham. He holds certifications in advanced cardiovascular life support and basic life support.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hirji has been actively involved in professional organizations. He is a member and past president of the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association and a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Massachusetts chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a candidate member and a planning committee member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Hirji’s civic engagement includes volunteering as a second opinion medical professional for triage cases within local communities, serving at his community mosque and founding a blind school in Tanzania.

Having authored numerous influential publications as a recognized expert in his field, Dr. Hirji’s research has appeared in major journals. His landmark paper on 30-day versus 90-day outcomes, published in JAMA Cardiology, prompted industry-wide reevaluation of hospital performance metrics. His most notable career achievement, however, has been critically defining how transcatheter technologies should be utilized across age groups and clinical scenarios. Dr. Hirji has also been serving as an editorial board member for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery’s digital and sponsorship committee.

In light of his success, Dr. Hirji has been recognized for numerous awards, including a Maxwell Chamberlain Award from STS, a C. Walton Lillihei Award from the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, and a Joseph Murray Resident Research Award from the Massachusetts chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

Eager for the future of his career, Dr. Hirji aims to become a hybrid surgeon capable of offering both traditional open surgeries and minimally invasive procedures for complex cardiac conditions, ensuring patients receive tailored options that best suit their needs as technology evolves. He is currently working toward establishing an outcomes group focused on evaluating emerging technologies as they are integrated into clinical practice. Additionally, Dr. Hirji is pursuing membership with leading professional societies while prioritizing impactful involvement within major organizations shaping cardiovascular medicine.
