Edward Gwin, MD, retired medical doctor at Edward Gwin MD LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pulmonary medicine.

Dr. Gwin’s distinguished medical career spanned more than five decades, marked by innovation, dedication and a profound impact on the field of pulmonary and sleep medicine. Now retired, he reflects with admiration on his career, one that was inspired by his uncle, a renowned surgeon who was involved in pioneering heart transplant technology. This early passion for medicine guided Dr. Gwin’s lifelong pursuit of excellence.

Beginning his medical career in 1974, Dr. Gwin joined Ferrell Duncan Clinic in Springfield, Missouri, where he practiced until 2008. His clinical responsibilities included caring for patients with pulmonary conditions. He also began treating sleep medicine patients in 1980 after establishing Springfield’s first sleep laboratory, the second such facility in Missouri and neighboring states. Under Dr. Gwin’s leadership as the medical director of the sleep center and respiratory therapy departments, the laboratory quickly achieved accreditation and set new standards for regional care.

Dr. Gwin’s expertise extended to intensive care work as a pulmonary medicine doctor and critical care doctor at Cox Medical Center, also in Springfield, where he managed internal medicine patients outside of intensive care units. In addition to his primary practice, Dr. Gwin served as a part-time physician at a rural hospital in Missouri for 15 years, retiring in 2023 at the age of 84.

After graduating from East Central University with an undergraduate degree in biology and English and a minor in chemistry, with honors, Dr. Gwin acquired a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1966. He then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970. Stationed at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, during the Vietnam War, he held the rank of captain, providing care for cadets, active duty personnel and retired military members. Following his service, Dr. Gwin completed a rotating internship at St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, between 1970 and 1971. From there, he pursued a fellowship in internal medicine and pulmonary disease at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he was exposed to pioneering advancements, such as the fiber-optic bronchoscope, which shifted his focus from internal medicine to pulmonology.

Dr. Gwin holds board certifications from the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine in both pulmonary medicine and internal medicine. He is recognized for his expertise in pulmonary medicine, internal medicine, critical care, inpatient care and sleep laboratory management.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Gwin has established connections with like-minded individuals through his membership in several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Missouri Medical Association, and the Greene County Medical Association. Beyond his clinical achievements, he has made significant contributions to civic life, serving as a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, a founding board member of a hands-on children’s museum in Springfield, and a volunteer at the Dickerson Park Zoo for over two decades.

Dr. Gwin’s scholarly contributions include two research articles published in Chest, a leading pulmonary journal, during his residency. He was also invited to present at the International Congress of Bronchology meeting in New York City on the early applications of the fiber-optic bronchoscope. Apart from his scholarly contributions, Dr. Gwin authored the book “A Bad Love in the Ozarks: White-Collar Crime, The Story of an Ultimate Predator: Attorney Gary A. Love, P.C.” in 2022.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gwin has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to patient care. He is particularly proud of his work with patients whose recoveries defied medical expectations, most notably a young woman who suffered a brain injury and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and made a remarkable recovery after being declared brain-dead. Dr. Gwin credits faith and perseverance as vital elements in such outcomes. In recognition of his service, he received honorary retired doctor membership from Cox Medical Center.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gwin has sought to balance professional dedication with family life, striving always to be remembered as a supportive father and grandfather while advancing medical practice through compassion, innovation and leadership.
