James Anderson, Professor of Medicine at the University of Kentucky, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nutrition, diabetes and obesity.
For Dr. Anderson, practicing medicine was a divine calling. Growing up, he watched his mother work as a nurse in a small West Virginia town, and she was highly regarded by her peers. When he was 13, Dr. Anderson was attending an evangelistic meeting that illuminated his own path would be in medicine. When in med school, this path was further revealed, as he was called upon to help people with diabetes. While he has racked up a great number of awards, nothing has been rewarding for him throughout this career than partnering with some of the best medical and nutritional doctors and conducting research that has impacted and lead to better care for patients. He founded the Obesity Research Network and with more than 20 of the best obesity research doctors has jointly conducted more than 100 research studies.
To answer his calling in medicine, Dr. Anderson first received a Bachelor of Science from West Virginia University in 1958. He continued at Northwestern University, receiving an MD at Northwestern University n 1961. From there, he completed an internship at the Presbyterian Medical Center and then a residency at the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. In 1965, Dr. Anderson received a MS from the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. Dr. Anderson also served as a Captain in the US Army from 1965 to 1968.
In1968, Dr. Anderson began working in the field of education as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of California. In 1973, he joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky as a professor of medicine and clinical nutrition, where he remains in present day. In 1979, he became the president and founder of HCF Nutrition Foundation, where he has continued to supplement his desire to help others through nutrition. In his career, he has authored a number of works and served on the editorial board for various organizations. In 2011, he published “The Simple Diet-A Doctor’s Science-Based Plan,” and he has also written, “Dr. Anderson’s Antioxidant Anti-aging,” “Dr. Anderson’s High Fiber Fitness Plan” and “Diabetes-A Practical Guide to Health Living.” He served on the editorial boards of Vegetarian Nutrition, Diabetes-Self-Management, Prevention Magazine and Medicine, Exercise, Nutrition & Health.
